Bet On Me. Prompted by
tees2mai Eunhyuk had a secret.
It wasn’t one of those earth-shattering, life-changing secrets that could be used as blackmail material. No, it was a rather mundane secret, one that could be passed over without so much of a second glance.
Eunhyuk was afraid of losing.
It was a rather unfounded fear, really. Eunhyuk had never lost any game or bet in his entire life, a track record that he took great pride in and intended to keep. After all, winning was his thing.
Eunhyuk loved winning, and, thankfully, he had the goods to back that up. Winning was exciting, and no matter how many times the piles of poker chips were amassed in his corner, each victory brought him a unique satisfaction that could not be found any other way. Winning was, essentially, Eunhyuk’s life. But…
Eunhyuk sometimes wondered what losing would be like. It was a morbid sort of curiosity, one he really shouldn’t be entertaining considering that one slip up in his game could cost him a fortune. Still, Eunhyuk wondered.
Would it feel like everything was slowly slipping out of his control? Would it be like falling off the edge with nothing to hold onto and only the ground rushing up to meet him? Would it seem like watching everything he worked for descend into utter chaos as he could do nothing but watch? Or would it be something else entirely?
As Eunhyuk walked out of that apartment, numb and feeling emptier than he ever had in his entire life, he started to laugh. He didn’t stop laughing until he had collapsed on the front stairs of the building, ignoring the liquid pushing at the corners of his eyes. Leaning back until he was lying on the cold stone steps, Eunhyuk caught his breath, fighting back the uncomfortable feeling in his chest.
Eunhyuk had come to a realization that night. He wasn’t afraid of losing at his own games. He wasn’t afraid of losing at all. In fact, he almost relished the feeling of it. Losing gave him a rush, a masochistic thrill that winning never could. What he was truly afraid of was losing something far more precious, and that was no unfounded fear.
Eunhyuk slowly got up from the steps and brushed himself off. Without a single glance behind him, he turned and walked away.
Eunhyuk had a secret. And that secret was that he’d bet on Donghae long before the other had asked him to.
