It was no secret that Stella Bonasera was scared - that she lived her life in fear. It wasn’t the rational type of fear that most people had; such as money problems or family. Instead it was the fear of letting people get too close to her. That fear had only been amplified by Frankie.
The team understood - they never asked to come over or visit; instead opting to communicate with Stella either in the lab or by meeting up. After Frankie had attacked her she’d had to evaluate her rule on no men at her place - causing it to instead evolve into no people at her place, at all. But as she knew, the team understood.
But, as everyone knows, with every rule there must be an exception. And Mac Taylor was Stella Bonasera’s exception. He was the only person allowed into her home - and into her heart; they even had a routine.
Once every-so-often, after a particularly hard case that had reduced them both to the borderline of numbness, Mac would show up at her door with take-out and chocolate in hand. Then they’d settle down to the mundane television shows until the take-out was finished, before finally putting usual film on and starting the chocolate. They’d sit there in comfortable silence until the end of the film where the lead character would die in a heroic fashion. It’d be then that the small sniffle of Stella Bonasera could be heard before she finally broke out into fresh tears. Mac would then pull her into his arms and hold her as she wept - both pretending that it was the film she was crying over.
