We Remember and Honor

It is Memorial Day, a day when we get up at sunrise and raise the flag, maybe have a barbeque or watch a parade, but mostly we think about the sacrifice that our young men and women in the military have made over the years that this country has been in existence. When Cindy Sheehan asks President Bush, "For what noble cause did my son give his life?" she is missing the point. And so is the President in not answering. When soldiers, sailor, marines, and airmen enlist, they accept the possibility of losing their lives. As important, they accept being under the command of superior officers who may order them to risk their lives or to perform acts that they might personally oppose. They do this willingly because an orderly defense force is vital to the preservation of this country. This country is the noble cause that they serve, not a specific war or a specific policy. It is not necessary for a soldier to agree with the politics or policies of his Commander-and-Chief. It is only necessary that he follow legal orders from his commanders.

Today we honor the noble service and the sacrifice of the military of the United States of America, a country with the noble purpose, to secure the unalienable rights of Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness for all its citizens. Those who oppose the policies and politics of the current government honor this sacrifice and this noble country no less than those who support it. They are exercising the Right of the People to alter or to abolish their government. Fortunately, the Founding Fathers established a form of government that can be altered without resort to revolution.
