I don't think any of you will think less of me if I admit to not having read any of EE Smith's novels since I turned 15. If you're going to read something like The Lensman series at all it's certainly is better to do so early on so you can get on with your life. None the less this situation has left me with one teeny-tiny grain of uncertainty. Did Smith really write 'Then, as Kinnison kissed his wife, half a million Lensed members were thrust upward in silent salute.' as Dave Langford likes to claim? Yes probably, but confirmation would be nice because the line is just too good to be true.
The problem with that however is that the obvious easy way out has already failed me. All my favourite search engine turns up are quotes from that Langford chap, which is hardly independent confirmation. Since I don't want to know badly enough to actually read any EE Smith the only option left to me is to ask here if anybody can offer me confirmation.
It would really be nice if it were true. It would strengthen that certain 'all men together' feel the Lensman series have. Oh yes, it's there, else how do you explain this piece of Max Keasler artwork from the fifties?
