A/N: It's been a while. I honestly suck at keeping up with chaptered stories. I should just write out a substantial amount of my chaptered stories before I start posting but I get so excited when I start a new that I just have to post it. Oh well, hopefully the people who were looking out for this update haven't forgotten about the story.
Chapter 2
Thick As Thieves - Chapter 2
Elizabeth glared at the case files littering her desk. The one in particular that she had opened was filled with speculation and rumor and of course about seventeen small, white calling cards. She groaned and expelled an exasperated breath.
“You know, staring at the file isn’t going to make Burke and Caffrey appear ready and willing to confess.” Jones said as he handed her a mug of coffee and picked up the file off of her desk.
“Shut up. I know that, but goddamn it, you would think in the four years they’ve been working together they would make a mistake or leave some evidence.” She took a vicious sip of her coffee. Jones flipped through the file and nodded absently.
“You know, you caught Neal once, maybe you should focus on picking out his trail.”
“Peter’s too good. He wouldn’t let Neal leave anything for me to find.”
“Really regretting that trip to Madrid huh?” Jones grinned and dodged the pen that was tossed at him. He handed the file back to her and patted her on the shoulder. “Take a rest. Work on another case, take a break from chasing your husband and his boyfriend.”
“Jones, don’t you have coffee to take to an outranking agent somewhere?”
Jones chuckled at her false anger and shot her a mock salute before walking out of her office and back to his desk. She shook her head after him and turned back to the file.
About six and a half years ago, she had been on an extradition case in Madrid. She met Peter Burke, a mysterious business man, and fell head over heels in love. She took a month sabbatical from the FBI and spent it in Madrid with Burke. They got married after a month of a steamy and passionate romance and moved back to New York together. Elizabeth went back to the FBI and they lived in happy married bliss for about six months.
One day, out of the blue, she woke up and he was gone. There was a note on his pillow that said I still love you. She was devastated but she got past it. It wasn’t until a few weeks after he had left that she put two and two together when another bank robbery occurred that the FBI was attributing to Peter Burke.
Coincidence? She thought not.
Since then she had received various holiday cards, postmarked from cities all over the world, from her estranged husband, world renowned thief, Peter Burke.
And now it turns out he had returned to New York City with his partner and lover.
“I need something stronger than coffee right now.” She said to herself as she closed the file and took a sip of her quickly cooling coffee.

June was happy to see her boys home.
It had been almost a year since Neal and Peter had left to chase a lead on Kate and she had missed them. In their absence the house had been silent and somewhat solemn. Now that they had returned it was filled with the sounds of their playful banter (Neal), frustrated bickering (Peter), and passionate lovemaking.
“You boys must tell me about your time overseas.” June said as she poured some more tea for Peter.
Neal smiled and leaned against Peter’s arm. They were seated comfortably on one of June’s couches in her expansive sitting room having tea. Peter leaned forward to retrieve his refilled cup from the table and then sat back significantly closer to Neal taking a sip of his tea.
“It interesting to say the least June.” He said giving Neal a sideways glance.
“I had fun. Peter’s just mad that we didn’t go to the Louvre. I didn’t want to because that’s just so cliché.” Neal said patting Peter’s hand. Peter stuck his tongue out childishly at Neal and June giggled when Neal leaned up and pecked Peter on the corner of his mouth.
“Did you find anything about Kate?” June asked.
Neal’s eyes went dark at the mention of his missing ex-fiancé. He entwined his hands with Peter’s and looked at the floor. Peter shook his head and sighed.
“We thought we had caught up to her in Köln but the trail went cold. I have some contacts in Germany so I told them to keep an eye out, there’s a possibility that she is still somewhere in the country.” Peter said. June nodded looking sympathetically at Neal’s defeated look. Peter turned his head and placed a chaste kiss to his hair and laid his head on the younger man’s head.
He didn’t mind using up resources and travelling to absurd destinations searching for Neal’s ex-fiancé. He knew that Neal loved him and Kate was no threat to their relationship missing or not. Peter had his own baggage in the form of a wife in the FBI and he was in no place to judge or be jealous.
He had promised Neal that he would stop at nothing to find Kate when he had broken the young man out of prison four years ago. In return, Neal joined him and became his partner in crime literally. He hadn’t planned on them getting closer than just acquaintances if not good friends when he had made the offer. He just felt that he was getting too old to work on his own and thus found the best damn forger and art thief that he knew of, Neal Caffrey.
When they did start sharing a bed, Neal had wondered if that meant that Peter wasn’t going to want to find Kate anymore. Peter had assured him that their change in relationship had no influence on his promise to help find Kate. He had given Neal his word and he would follow through.
Peter would admit though that it hurt a bit to know that Neal was still so broken up about Kate.
June nodded at the two men and smiled slightly at their displays of affection. She stood and kissed Peter on the forehead and patted Neal on the head softly.
“You’ll find her, I know it.” With that she cleared up the tea things and puttered off to the kitchen.
Peter watched her leave before standing himself lifting Neal up with him. The taller man stretched and yawned like a cat and looked dejectedly down at his feet. Peter turned his face to look at him and leaned up to place a kiss on his lips.
“She’s right. We will find her.”
Neal nodded slightly and a small part of him knew that Peter was telling the truth.
