Best/Worst Movies of 2007

Jan 16, 2008 19:37

Same approach as last year--en lieu of masturbatory comments on this year's best and worst, I will field comments (if any) debating (or praising) my reasoning. I will say that this year's crop of films made those of 2006 look like a eunuch colony, with almost every great director (or, in the case of the Coen brothers, directorial team) currently working putting out something worthy (or transcendent) of their talents. As with last year, there will be some overlap from 2006.

The Best:

1. Grindhouse
2. Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
3. Eastern Promises
4. Bug / The Mist (tie)
6. No Country for Old Men
7. Gone Baby Gone
8. Sicko
9. Zodiac
10. 3:10 to Yuma

Noble Efforts (the rest of the good):

Alpha Dog
Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters
Black Snake Moan
The Brave One
Captivity
Children of Men
1408
Halloween
The Hitcher
Hot Fuzz
I Am Legend
Juno
Live Free or Die Hard
The Lookout
Pierrepoint: The Last Hangman
Roman
300
Vacancy

Disappointments:

Borat
Death Sentence
Hatchet
Michael Clayton
Ratatouille
30 Days of Night
28 Weeks Later

The Worst:

1. Inland Empire
2. Hostel: Part II
3. The Hills Have Eyes 2
4. Knocked Up
5. Saw IV

As an added attraction, here's something that packs more genius into 2 brief minutes than 3 long hours of Inland Empire:
