Margaret frowned at Charlie. "No hanging your brother," she scolded.

"I'd break the branch," Donnie said, nodding. "Santa will give you coal for tree abuse."

Their dad laughed.

Their mother rolled her eyes.

"So, Donnie, find something you like?" Alan asked.

"Um, no," Donnie said. But his eyes went up to the Mustang P-51.

"That's a very nice plane," his mother said unhappily, also looking up.

"Yeah," Donnie said. "It's cool."

"Is that what you want?" his father said gruffly.

Donnie at eleven was hardly an expert at reading people. However, he could see his parents were unhappy. He wondered if it was because they didn't like the plane or because they didn't want to let him down.

"Um, no," he said.

"You sure?" his father asked. "You seem to enjoy watching it."

"Yeah," Donnie said, hoping his father couldn't tell that he was lying. Then inspiration struck. "It's already made. I want something I can make!"

His dad clapped his shoulder. "Good man, Donnie," he said. His mother smiled in relief.

Donnie was glad that his parents were happy, but who was going to make him happy?

"So, what would you like?" Alan asked again.

"How about a train set?" Charlie suggested.

They looked from the airplane display to the train display.

Their parents cheered up noticeably. At least, to Donnie they did.

Trains were cool, Donnie decided. He didn't even have to fake being excited. "Yeah!" he said. Then he decided to really get into the Christmas spirit. "Charlie and I could share it!"

His parents looked happier. Charlie beamed. Donnie realized that he was good at making people happy, including himself.

"Well, I'm sure we can find both of you something nice for Christmas," their mother said. "Why don't we look around and see what they have?"
