Thirteen year old Amita Ramanujan stepped back from her masterpiece and beamed. Her first computer ! And she'd built it all by herself!

"Well done, Amita," her father's voice made her jump.

"DAD!" Amita shrieked.

Her mother giggled.

"Sorry, sweetheart," her father said. He surveyed her handiwork proudly. "So, does it work or does it just flash pretty lights?" he teased.

Amita rolled her eyes and sighed dramatically. "Of course it works! It's got a dual processor..."

"You know what it doesn't have?" her father interupted hastily.

Amita smirked at this sign of technophobia. "What?"

"A proper computer stand," her father said. "Surely you don't expect to sit on the ground while you use this marvel of technology!"

Amita studied him suspiciously, suspecting sarcasm. However, the truth of his statement was apparent. Her masterpiece couldn't sit on the floor!

"Shall we go find a stand for you?" her mother said happily. She didn't understand computers at all. Shopping, however, was something she could get behind.

Amita and her parents hit the mall, but nothing satisfied the budding computer genius.

"I want something special!" Amita insisted. "Not some mass produced, pressboard..." she trailed off as the only word she knew that was strong enough would get her grounded for a week.

Her mother nodded. "Shall we try an antique store?"

But not even the antique shops held anything satisfactory.

Discouraged, they headed home. Then...

"Stop!" shrieked Amita. "There it IS!"

Her father, startled, stomped on the brakes, squealing to a halt.

There, sitting next to the curb, waiting to be picked up by the city, was an old oak desk that had seen better days.

"It's going to need work," her father mused.

"I know!" enthused Amita. "But my fixing it up will make it the perfect stand for my masterpiece!"
