At first, Charlie had hope, that slenderest of threads. One day he’d go to work, and Amita would be there, and they’d both apologize, and they’d both laugh. And they’d be together again.

Then came the news that she had started her new job. Assistant Professor Amita Ramanujan. So far away.

…and he couldn’t stop hearing the last things they’d said to each other.

The human mind is a fragile structure, able to be physically injured in so many ways that it is a wonder it still exists. Psychologically, even more frail, as memories build atop and alongside feelings and vice versa; ropes and anchors bind one to another within the thoughts. Remove one bedrock of support, and the resulting dangers abound; Charlie had lost two.

“Thanks for calling, letting me know,” Don told Larry.

“You’re welcome,” Larry said, still unsure why his friend was being so nonresponsive. “Is it shock?”

“It’s a relapse,” Don said under his breath, watching Charles Eppes working at the chalkboards so diligently, so determinedly. Right now, those numbers were the only thing in his world. Dad is not gonna like this, Don knew.

“Is there anything I can do to help?”

“I’ll let you know, okay? Thanks.”
