“Hey, Charlie. How’d it go? Did Maggie give you too much trouble?” Don whispered as he and Robyn tipped-toed into the living room, scanning the room for their 3 year old daughter.
“She was an absolute angel. Fell asleep about an hour ago.” Charlie rocked back and forth onto the balls of his feet, hands stuffed into his jeans pocket and a smug grin on his face.
Robyn grabbed him by the arms and embraced him tightly. “Oh my god. You are a miracle worker. We haven’t gotten a decent night’s sleep in almost a month, every since she suddenly became afraid of the dark. We’ve tried everything from night-lights to stuffed animals. What’s your secret, Uncle Charlie?”
“No secret. Just logic and science. And a little help from our friendly neighborhood cosmologist for accuracy of design.” Charlie gestured for the two to follow him to Maggie’s room. Quietly, he cracked open the bedroom and let his brother and sister-in-law gaze up at the softly-lit night sky now shining down from Maggie’s ceiling.
Whispering, Charlie explained, “Larry swears counting stars puts him to sleep every time. So a little fabric, some fiber-optic light strands carefully arranged in constellation groups, and voila! A canopy perfect for sleeping under the stars.”
