When Sandy arrived back at home he found his wife in the kitchen, slicing apples while Rosa was cooking lunch.
“Honey, are you really sure you know what you are doing?” he teased Kirsten.
“Not funny Sandy, besides I’ve already gotten a lecture about my cooking skills and I’m being supervised by the young man over there.” she replied pointing at her son, whom was sitting at the end of the kitchen isle.
Sandy, not recognizing the boy in his kitchen as Ryan, greeted him “I’m Sandy Cohen. And you are?”
Kirsten shot a nervous glance at her son, worrying about his reaction.
“That depends on how much trouble I’m in and how a good lawyer you are.” Ryan began and watched with amusement the questioning look Sandy gave his wife.
“At the moment I’m Benjamin Lucas Davis, but I should be Ryan Alexander Cohen.” Ryan finished, as calm and neutral as possible, waiting eagerly for his father to realize what he’d just been told.
“And that’s why?” Sandy asked, apparently not quite comprehending.
“Looks like my family believes that I died in a car crash last May” the boy answered, enjoying his dad’s slow-wittedness way too much.
“Do they know now that you are still alive?”
“My mom knows, but my dad has troubles getting it” Ryan stated, his face not giving away anything.
Standing behind her husband, Kirsten couldn’t take it any longer and began laughing quietly while Rosa turned back to the stove to hide her grin.
“Kirsten, I don’t think that this is funny”
“You didn’t get his name, did you?” Kirsten asked.
“Sure I did. It’s Ryan Alexander … I must have misunderstood your last name?!” Sandy replied.
“I don’t think you did. It’s Cohen” Ryan said.
“This is a joke, right; a really bad one.” Sandy said getting slightly angry.
“No dad, it’s not.” the boy replied, starting to get worried.
“Do you really think this is funny? Pretending to be my son, who died nearly a year ago?” his dad yelled at him.
“I need to get out of here … sorry mom, Rosa; I’ll be at Luke’s.” Ryan said and left the kitchen.
