Dub Qawwali

Last night, with the renewal of my monthly eMusic donwload cap, I grabbed Gaudi's "Dub Qawwali", featuring dub rerubs of the works of the legendary Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. I loved Nusrat in his prime, and his later collaborative works on RealWorld pretty much set the stage for a lot of the "Asian Massive" movement of the 90's.

I'd heard of this album from Dr. Parks, but really didn't pay too much attention. I'm not a huge dub fan (I maintain a passing interest, but it's not my top priority) and there've already been a bunch of Nusrat remix collections, so I wrote it offas a gimmick that I'd get eventually but not now.

Well, color me corrected because it is an excellent album. Especially "Dil Da Rog Muka Ja Mahi" (don't ask me to translate...something about "heart" and "love", which makes me think it's a ghazal and not a qawwal) which has a sort of playful electro-dub take on Kraftwerk's "The Model" mixed in. There's also a makred filmi influence as well, with lush bollywood-style strings mixed in with the dub backbeats and echoed snares.

Seriously, it's good.
