If you grasp the thread firmly and yank, it will break. Just remember, if you yank it off the roll of thread remember to cut it later because ripped thread is realy hard to out into a needle.

I tried that first. My needle is now crooked. I really just should have waited until I got home and had the proer tools.

well, one wouldn't snap the thread by hanging onto the needle you know...

They would if they had doubled up the string so the needle wasn't able to be removed at the end of it without cutting/burning/etc.
I initially got the thread cut off the roll by sawing at it with a key since yanking wasn't working.
