Things have been going good for the past few days. I presented my research to the entire group on Wednesday for the first time and I actually had things to say, so that was somewhat gratifying. I also took the latter part of tonight off to catch the free skate - I never miss that! (right,
ladyvokosigan?) Arakawa was both beautiful and a worthy champion. I had peeked at the results beforehand, but after seeing Slutskaya's energetic performance it was kind of a shame that she fell.
Stanford had its first prospective visit today. I didn't meet any potentials, which I kind of regret. I didn't think I would be so territorial, but I actually worry about who's going to join the lab next year. We're going to have to recruit some pretty awesome people to replace the amazing fifth years in the group. I have to get more involved and take an active role in recruitement.
I did go to the poster session for about 10 minutes, and heard a prospective asking someone in my lab, "So if I come in a bit earlier, would I be able to leave earlier in the evening?" Sheesh, it's amazing how quickly word gets around. And apparently, someone asked someone else in my lab, "So, what hours does the laziest person in your lab work?" If somebody had asked me that I would have said, "What are you doing here?" but a guy in the lab had the perfect diplomatic response, "None of us are lazy".
