Damnation Festival

So, went to Damnation festival on Saturday and a damned awesome festival it was too. Quite a few annoying line-up clashes, but oh well. Definitely got my money's worth.

Ended up missing the first round of bands but I'm not bothered because I wasn't fussed on them anyway. First band I saw were Onslaught, who delivered a veritable, erm, onslaught of thrash from start to finish. Great set, but the pits seemed to lose energy as the show wore on. Shame.

Next up were Sigh. The sound could've done with being clearer, but other than that it was amazing set. Of the band only Mirai and Mikannibal have any real stage presence, but between them they more than make up for the comparatively boring rest of the band. It's interesting to note how timid and reserved Mikannibal looked while they were setting up, but once the show started it up she became a completely different beast. A sexy beast. That plays a mean saxophone. Oh those crazy Japanese. Awesome show, rounded off by a blistering cover of Venom's Black Metal.

Once Sigh's set was finished I quickly dashed off to the Terrorizer stage to catch the last three or four songs of Benediction's set. Not a lot to say other than that Benediction play some damn good old school death metal. Could've caught the end of Ramesses if I'd wanted to, but I decided to stick around and get a good spot for Napalm Death instead. In the end I think it was worth it, as Barney and chums played a fantastic set. Napalm Death are one of those bands with a back catalogue that's so full of awesome tunes that it's hard for them to put on a bad set really, it's just classic after classic after classic. Crowd went mad for it to, non-stop pits from start to finish.

Once Napalm Death had finished I hurried off to the Rock Sound stage see Cathedral. They were already on when I got there on account of Napalm Death coming on really late, but what I did get to see was incredible. Really great sound, awesome set list (including a brand new song that's sounding very good), Cathedral are a doom band that know how to rock. An encore of Ride and Hopkins to finish of the set was absolute heaven for me. Definitely have to see them again.

After Cathedral were finished I decided to head back to the Jagermeister stage to see if Carcass were still on, but only managed to catch their last song. Oh well, at least I managed to see them at Hellfest and Wacken.

Overall, an awesome festival. Well worth going, every band I saw play was absolutely amazing. :D

metal, gigs, damnation
