Amputated + Necrocest + Anal Floss is Boss + Final
Went out to the Barfly Cardiff for the first time in a good long while tonight to see those sick bastards from Bristol - good ol' Amputated.
First band were not Kryophere as advertised on the Barfly website but a three-piece called Final. The frontwoman was incredibly shy to start off with, but she seemed to get into things a bit more as their set went on. Musically they were fairly so-so black metal. They had their moments but they were mostly unremarkable and their songs had a tendency to overstay their welcome.
Anal Floss is Boss were nowhere near as entertaining as they should be to deserve their hilariously terrible moniker. Still, the two-piece played some halfway-decent grindy stuff with a sense of groove. Shit vocals though. Also wasting ten minutes sorting out the mic didn't exactly raise my estimations of them either, especially as they only used it for one song after that (the other songs were an instrumental and one where the drummer did the vocals). The half-hearted but technically competent drum solo the drummer was eventually coaxed into doing didn't really help.
Necrocest were a hell of an improvement over the first two though. A healthy dose of brutal welsh death metal and some awesome windmilling from the bassist. How he managed to perform some of the fastest windmilling I've seen in my life and still keep up some pretty technical bass lines I have no idea, but it was a sight to behold to say the least.
Amputated were even better still. Fucking amazing set, lots of new stuff but all sounding very brutal. And as always ol' Morbid Mark handed out some top quality stage banter, mostly aimed at the fact the crowd were utter shite! Seriously. Not one fucking person headbanging or moshing besides myself. Okay, that's a lie - me and some other dude had a two-man mosh pit for one song (Cunt Like A Sewer? I forget) and during the last song some other guy did some ironic dancing - but other than that it was just me windmilling and slamming away while everyone else stood there watching like a bunch of emos. Fair play moshing isn't everyone's cup of tea and there are a few people out there who'd rather watch and appreciate the music, but it's a fucking goregrind gig! It's fucking Amputated! There should've been at least a few sick motherfuckers tearing each other a part down the front! When a band gets a better crowd reaction (at similarly sized venues mind!) in bloody Cambridge rather than Cardiff something's gone horribly wrong. For fuck's sake, only about 15-20 people showed up (quite possibly including the other bands) - more people showed up to see them in the bloody Man on the Moon!
On the plus side, at one point Morbid Mark said he'd give a free CD to anyone who came down front and moshed. I was the only one who did, but at least he made good on his word. :D
