Reading old Socialist/Marxist theory, I don't think the definitions are as dated as you may think. Sure, a large percentage of the proletariat now own something that makes them money without labor, but the percentage of earnings from it are low (and even lower in the current economy where my 401K didn't change for years). Owning stocks/401Ks, etc, is one of the current traps in modern capitalism to make workers believe that they are now capitalists and that their interests are in the capitalist system, the same system that allows the boss/owner/etc. to make millions off of his and his fellow employee's work. Notice that most people get their tie to the stock market through benefits at work.
Contractors are nothing new and are still selling their labor. In your company's case the means of production is the company itself. Now, this contract employee may have the choice to try and sell his labor on an open market, but the system has made it so that many contract employees can find no work on the open market.
There have always been people who do not fall in this duality. Small business owners/shopkeepers are a classic example. There always will be. However, Capitalism has and will continue to increase the number of people who fall in to these categories as it is destroying the small business owner as the owners of capital become larger and more powerful.
