Comic Books: Some Thoughts and Opinions

I haven't been feeling like doing reviews lately but I do have a few things to comment on....

The comics I am enjoying the most these days are all related to Joss Whedon in one way or another. Buffy Season Eight and Angel: After the Fall have been getting very good. The newest issue gives us Buffy's first encounter with the apparent big bad for the season and in classic Buffy fashion, the first encounter ends badly. After the Fall has been one twist after another as each issue reveals a little more about what happened to the Angel gang after L.A. literally went to Hell. The only Marvel comics I've been picking up these days are Runaways and Astonishing X-Men. Whedon's run on Astonishing is coming to a close, which makes me very sad. With the exception of the "Danger" story arc, I have really enjoyed his run.

I am getting really tired of seeing writers re-tell previously told stories. The newest issue of Superman Confidential tells how Superman makes Jimmy Olsen a signal watch, despite the fact that this was already told in different ways (although it is usually Jimmy who made the watch since the Crisis on Infinite Earths). Previously, I have complained about this on Scans Daily and people have defended it by saying that the versions of the story told before Infinite Crisis don't exist any more in the "New Earth," but this particular story has already been told since Infinite Crisis...last year! Instead of moving Superman and his world forward with new developments like the comics did through the 80s and 90s, these days writers keep wanting to tell origin stories....over and over again.

On the bright side, the new story arc in Superman Confidential has art by one of my favorite artists, Phil Hester (with inks by Andre Parks).

Besides the Whedon stuff, the other comics keeping me going in to the comic shop regularly are the Green Lantern titles. While I may not be crazy about everything happening, the stories are so well written that I keep coming back for more.

I picked up volume one of Y: The Last Man lately. I think I've found a new series of Vertigo graphic novels I will be buying while I wait for another volume of Fables to come out.

I found issues 2 and 3 of Battlestar Galactica: Cylon Apocalypse in a 50¢ box at a local shop and picked them up. I had stopped picking up the series after issue 1 because the first issue was so bad. I guess I judged too quickly. The first issue may have been bad but the next two issues are the best Battlestar Galactica (classic) comics I have read. They really capture the characters and tell an interesting story.

battlestar galactica, buffy, comics, superman, joss whedon
