Cloverfield

So the Abrams movie, Cloverfield, is still a big mystery and it comes out in January. It's a giant monster. If that wasn't completely clear before, the new trailer makes that clear. Abrams claimed it was a new property, not a license or sequel, and a lot of folks have been speculating it is Lovecraft-based. Abrams said he got the idea when looking at Godzilla merchandise in Japan and thinking that America needs its own giant monster. (He said King Kong was too cute.)

The new trailer makes it look a lot like Godzilla.....and a good Godzilla, not "Zilla" from the first US movie. First of all, it sounds like Godzilla's roar a couple times in the background. Second, there is one shot of "Cloverfield" walking past some buildings and you don't see much...but what you do see could easily be the classic Godzilla. It is the right size and I swear I saw spines on its back. Of course, I may just be seeing what I want to, because I would love to see a good big-budget American-made 'zilla.
