f(x) member Sulli’s being cast for a drama’s lead role wasn’t anything out of the ordinary. Girl group members nowadays can often be seen as the main characters in dramas, and just like most of them are hit with controversies and obstacles, Sulli was expected to be no different.
She did act as a child actor when she was little, but that was a long time ago and she hadn’t had chances to act in the time between then and her debut with f(x).
Amidst such issues, her drama To the Beautiful You finally unveiled itself on August 15. The drama had even gathered more attention outside of its idol cast for being directed by producer Jun Gi Sang, the man behind the popular dramaBoys over Flowers.
Now, the drama has aired four episodes, but ever since it started off with 7.3 percent viewership ratings for its first episode (AGB Nielsen), it’s continued to stagger with meager one-digit ratings. The public shoot that suddenly took place on August 27 was one attempt to draw more interest to the flopping drama and rack up the ratings.
The drama suffers, but the main lead Sulli has curiously been gathering more expectations than ever before. This is because she’s turned out to be ‘special’.
First of all, Sulli turned out not to be a bad actor after all. When she appeared as a child actor in the dramas Seodongyoand Love Needs a Miracle, no one realized how those experiences would help her as an idol actress later on.
Sulli perfectly fit in her role as a girl who dressed up like a boy to meet Kang Tae Jun (Minho) at his boys’ high school.
She even showed off acting that was even more brilliant than some actresses’, as some spark controversies with their unstable acting. This was enough to get her viewers to like her.
One reason Sulli could come so close to her character Koo Jae Hee was that she never tried to be pretty. The reason actresses like to act as rich girls or splendid evil girls in their pieces is because in those roles they are able to show off how they can look their best in luxury.
Chae Si Ra, who recently made a comeback with the drama Five Fingers, proved this point by saying during the drama’s press conference that she “will be showing off a great transformation by caring more for costumes and makeup.”
It’s that important for actresses to show off their different charms like a chameleon. If things work out, they can gain the title of fashionista and easily get more contracts for photo spreads or clothing commercials. Sulli, however, chose to put down her femininity as if she had given up being a girl while filming for her piece.
She is, of course, still beautiful even when she’s dressed up like a boy, but even in the press conference and roundtable she tried hard to portray herself as Koo Jae Hee by dressing in clothes more boyish than those real boys would dress in.
Thanks to her acting and her effort, no controversies followed Sulli. This lack of controversy definitely contrasted from the way Five Fingers was flooded with debates as T-ara member Eun Jung was cast and then made to leave the drama.
The ratings are proving to be a weak point for the drama, averaging somewhere between five to seven percent, but it’s only aired four episodes so far and the love line has yet to unravel, providing more chances for the drama to step its game up and lead a rise in its ratings.
