so. i've been bitching and moaning about these eye drops i'm taking. the cost of these was $80 for a 2.5 mL bottle. the active ingredient is 0.2% by mass in this solution. using my super chemistry geeky ways... i did the math to figure out they are charging $40,000 per gram for the active chemical! and i've seen the compound, its complex, yes, but given time i could make this compound. granted i wouldn't put it near my face, but still. this gives me two thoughts:
1. i wish i had a part in the patent on this drug (talk about major bucks)
2. at some point price gouging reaches a sickly low for things like medication. there is no way that the cost of production for this drug justifies the price. the complany clearly holds a patent on the drug and/or the methods of producing it and similar compounds. this is an undiscovered monopoly of the type that holds back medical advancement.
these are the things that push me both towards and away from going into pharmaceutical research as a career choice. sure the money is there but i don't know if i have the heart for it!
