When I first moved into my new apartment here, I was so excited to have a kitchen again. To be able to cook food on my own after a month in the hotel was a great treat. However I've fallen into a rut. The food I make for myself seems to be one of the following:
1) 50% Tomatoes etc: Can of tomatoes, thrown in a skilet with some oil and spices, cooked and eaten over pasta.
variations: Add ground beef, chicken, various sizes of pasta.
2) 15% Stuffed pasta: Get a bag of raviolli or something like it, heat a can of tomato sauce, add spices, wine, cream, etc
3) 12% Stir fry: Heat up frozen veggies, dump in soy sauce, pepers, spices etc, eat over rice.
variations: Add ground beef, chicken, or eat over pasta.
4) 2% Fish-thing: Cocunut milk+ginger+curry to make a sauce, canned fish (like tuna or anchovies) in the sauce, eaten over pasta
note: this is not an everyday food.
5) 5% Quesadilla: Tortilla with cheese in it. Tortillas here are bad and really expensive.
6) 2% Bag-o-food: Pre-bagged, 'heat me up and eat' dinner.
7) 12% sandwich: Yummy french bread filled with meat, cheese (mmm cheese), and veggies.
8) 2% cream sauce: Cream, cheese, white wine, garlic, olive oil sauce. Served over meat (fish, chicken) and pasta/rice
There, I think that is the whole list of everything I have cooked for myself since I have moved here along with rough estimate of how often. My problem is this. I'm getting tired of them. Esp the 4 main ones on the list. Of the 4 lesser eaten ones on the list, the fish I only want once a month or so, the cream sauce is a lot of effort to make very often. I should make more Quesadillas though, and buy more 'bag-o-food'. Still, I need your help. What else would you recomend I make? Keep in mind this though:
First I go to a very small grocery store without a lot of stuff.
Second, buying fresh produce is hard because I don't speak french (unless it comes prepackaged with a barcode on it)
Third, I usually get home and don't want to spend an hour cooking these days.
Fourth, I only have 2 pans, one small pot, and one mixing bowl (if it's not too exotic/expensive, I can probably buy more some saturday though)
I know, I make it hard. But if you have any good ideas on things to cook that are easy, good for one person, and don't require things I can't find at the store, please let me know. My stomach thanks you.
