I think my sister knits continental style. Her aunt-in-law taugh her, and she's in Scotland. I remember my sister said she knits different than everyone else.
first you fly to minnesota. then i'll teach you ;)
it kind of depends on how you best learn new things. for me i'm totally a visual learner, so after trying for a year to teach myself out of a book i found a class. but if you think you can learn from a book there are probably a million and one out there that would do a great job for ya.
if you're a visual learner i would check out a yarn shop in your city and sign up for a class. oh but before you sign up for a class maybe post the class descriptions here and your fellow knitting friends can let you know if it sounds like a good class. you don't want to pay $50 for a class if all they're going to teach you is to cast on and bind off...you want to get your money's worth!
I would *love* to fly to minnesota. You can teach me and inkedmama at the same time. ;)
I'm definitely a visual learner. I'm gonna have to find a class. I found a yarn shop not far from here and I'm going to call to see if they offer classes. I'll let you know what they have so you can tell me if it sounds good.
My sister is also a really good knitter, I'll have her show me, as well.
Come and visit me. Or call your local yarn shop for beginner lessons. It really helps to be shown in person in the beginning. From there, the online videos are a great help.
I'm all about the feel of the yarn, so I tend to purchase from a yarn store instead of say walmart, but you can find reasonably priced yarns to start. I liked bamboo straight needles in the beginning, because they were not as slippery with the yarn while I was learning.
It's also really good to build a relationship with you local yarn shop. As you knit you continue to need to learn little things and it helps to have one place to go. Some churches also have knitting ministries and often welcome beginners and non-members.
