Voice of Mickey stilled

May 21, 2009 07:40

I found this really sad this morning. Well, it would be any morning, but this morning in particular for some reason.

Wayne Allwine, the voice of Mickey Mouse, has died.

I mean I knew there had to be a guy behind the voice, I just never really thought about it. Disney was always so careful about hiding the people behind the cartoons so as not to detract from the illusion I never really tried to find out. When the guys who voiced Tigger and Piglet died awhile back that was my first wakeup to realizing there are people in there, normal people, not celebrities. Maybe that's even better; they can live their lives without having flashbulbs pop in their faces and yet their voices are instantly recognizeable.

One of the things that startled me the most was that he was only the third person to voice Mickey. Which means it's him on my Kingdom Hearts II kneeling over Goofy vowing, "They'll pay for this" in that helium induced voice and somehow it's NOT comical! By all rights it should be and yet it's NOT.

They have to introduce a new actor, but I'll know the difference. And it will piss me off for a long time. I can't explain why Brian Henson's Kermit is so goddamed nails on the chalkboard caliber annoying. It's Just Not Kermit. I fear the same with Mickey. Same when in the 70's they got a different Ronald McDonald. The new guy? Not good. Irrational, but there it is.

I also thought it interesting that his wife voices Minnie. Talk about taking your work home with you! But at least we know, in real life, Mickey finally got his girl.

Thanks for everything, Mr. Allwine.
