SONG: Last Christmas by Wham!
Title: Last Christmas.
Ok here is the story:
Last Christmas.
Last Christmas, I gave you my heart
But the very next day, You gave it away
This year, to save me from tears
I'll give it to someone special
The snow was heavily falling outside the paned windows as the young boy stared out into the night; his eyes squinting into the darkness trying to catch a glimpse of his fathers red truck.
“Time for bed,” a voice called from behind him, causing the young boy to pull his blue eyes away from the blizzard and look behind him. His face just read disappointment. “I’ll wake you up as soon as he comes in.”
“But he promised,” the boy replied in a sad voice causing his mother to sigh. She shook her head slowly; she knew the routine. For the past two weeks it had been the same and nothing had changed. She knew that tomorrow would be the same; filled with broken promises.
Last Christmas, I gave you my heart
But the very next day, You gave it away
This year, to save me from tears
I'll give it to someone special
Seven years later.
His mother had remarried and they were happy. For once in his life James felt safe and wanted. His stepfather loved him as if he was his own and more importantly he kept his promises. He was someone James knew he could count on.
“Are you ready honey?” His mother asked walking into his bedroom and picking up a few pieces of clothing that lay on the floor. James looked up from his book and nodded, causing his mother to smile. “Okay get your shoes on then so we can go.”
James nodded and closed the book before getting up and pulling out his shoes from under the bed.
Once bitten and twice shy
I keep my distance but you still catch my eye
Tell me baby do you recognise me?
Well it's been a year, it doesn't surprise me
“Anna,” Justin smiled at his ex-wife as she approached him with no more than a nod. “It’s good to see you. Who’s this?” He looked over to the blonde haired boy by her side. Anna’s eyes changed color as he spoke and she shook her head.
“You should know,” she responded and placed a protective arm around her son. “He’s your son.”
“James?” Justin asked and stared at the young man. He was shocked he hardly recognized the boy. “He looks so different.”
“Seven years does that to a growing boy,” Anna replied and stared at him coldly. “You would know that if you bothered to even show up and see him.”
“Well I..” Justin began; he hardly knew how he could explain it to her.
“I don’t want to hear any more excuses,” Anna interrupted him. “I’ve heard them all for the past twelve years.”
“I know,” Justin sighed and hung his head; he was unable to look at her. His eyes drifted over to the boy who quickly looked away; unable to look his father in the eye.
(Happy Christmas!) I wrapped it up and sent it
With a note saying "I Love You" I meant it
Now I know what a fool I've been
But if you kissed me now I know you'd fool me again
The image of the baby blue sweater flashed through James’ head. He remembered how big it was and how his mother had made sure to pack it in a black rectangular box decorated with a simple red bow.
“Now make sure you write ‘I love you’ at the bottom,” she had told him after he had finished coloring in the snowmen on the card.
“Okay,” he had replied and written those special three words. He had handed the card to his mother and watched as she placed it in the envelope before placing it in the box with the sweater before wrapping up the whole package and sending it all the way to California via speed post. “Do you think daddy will like it?”
“I’m sure he’ll love it,” his mother smiled back and kissed his forehead. “I’ll even bet he’ll call and tell you himself.”
His father never did call that year or for the years that followed.
Chorus
(Oooh. Oooh Baby)
A crowded room, friends with tired eyes
I'm hiding from you and your soul of ice
My God I thought you were someone to rely on
Me? I guess I was a shoulder to cry on
A face on a lover with a fire in his heart
A man undercover but you tore me apart
Oooh Oooh
Now I've found a real love you'll never fool me again
James looked across the room at his father who seemed to go on with the previous conversation; almost forgetting he was there. He felt a pang in his chest, hoping his father would turn around to look and remember him. James remembered his father as if it was yesterday. The man hadn’t changed a bit with the exception of a few grey hairs here and there.
“You okay honey?” James turned and looked at his mother; her green eyes etched with worry for his son. James managed a smile and nodded; trying so hard to forget how much they both relied on the man he called daddy.
“Yeah,” he answered and ran a hand through his hair. “I’ll be ok.” His mother nodded but he knew she didn’t believe him; she hardly did.
“This was a bad idea,” she mumbled and shook her head. “I should have never...”
“No mom it was a great idea,” he smiled and looked around the room; his eyes falling back on his father who was talking to a few old friends. “It’s good to see everyone again after so many years.”
“Are you sure? Because if you want to go..” she began but he placed an arm on her shoulder.
“No mom I’m fine don’t worry,” he answered, “Go enjoy yourself okay? I’ll be fine.”
“Alright,” his mother sighed and took a sip of her drink before disappearing back into the crowd to search for her new husband.
Chorus
A face on a lover with a fire in his heart
(Gave you my heart)
A man undercover but you tore me apart
Next year
I'll give it to someone, I'll give it to someone special
special
someone
someone
I'll give it to someone, I'll give it to someone special
who'll give me something in return
I'll give it to someone
hold my heart and watch it burn
I'll give it to someone, I'll give it to someone special
I've got you here to stay
I can love you for a day
I thought you were someone special
gave you my heart
I'll give it to someone, I'll give it to someone
last christmas I gave you my heart
you gave it away.
“Hey Kid.” James looked up from his shoes and smiled at his stepfather Todd; who placed a worried hand on his shoulder. “How’s it going?”
“Okay. I guess,” James shrugged and looked across the room again at his father who was now on to his fourth drink.
“You guess?” Todd asked and followed the young man’s gaze across the room. “Have you tried talking to him yet?”
“Yes.. No,” James finally admitted and looked at the older man. “It’s just a waste of time.”
“No its not,” Todd lied and glanced across the room; he knew what the boy said was true. His father did not care about his needs.
“Yeah it is,” James replied and looked Todd square in the eye; catching him in his lie. “I can’t rely on him as much as I can you.”
