Movie Review
The Libertine
Rating: A
Summary: The story of John Wilmot, the Earl of Rochester, a 17th century english poet in King Charles II's court. The Court of Reason, but also one of great debautry and drinking, both of which John Wilmont was a paragon of. He was the King's favorite, and yet at the same time, The King's worse enemy for John Wilmont could not just be a noble who wenched and drank himself to death, no, he had to take his wickeness to such levels to insult the king before the public. John Wilmont dies a rather slow and painful death, thanks to his wicked behaviors, but the ultimate question remains...

Was he truly a death bed reformer? Or was John Wilmot starved for attention from a public who would never understand the true pain he was in being born noble and brillant?

Good: A+
Quote from The Libertine: "In my experince those who do not like you fall into two catagories: the stupid and the envious. The stupid will like you in five years, the envious never."

It was witty. I fell completely and absolutely in love with the quick wit and skill of the lines of this movie. Even in the most funny scenes, the wit never faulted which was a beautiful tribute to the poet that the movie was about. It was a wonderful view of what he saw in his world, and how the events around his life all seemed to conspire against him. The language was very fitting for the time period the movie was set, and of course Johnny Depp and John Malkovich, two of my most favorite actors can make me love anything in any language. They have such a wonderful power about them generally. If they just made historical pieces over and over again, I would be in heaven! (Ahem!) Also, there was many wonderful work done by the director and the art direction that made me really buy into the idea that this was John Wilmont's thoughts upon what was going on in his world. The film was in dark colors, and even the most brillant days in the setting were dark, dank and tinged with fog and a brownish lense of the camera. It was as if it was a memory, or a dream. A very welcome and wonderful touch!

Fun: B+
There was no blowing up buildings. Not that many "sex" scenes that seem to call out fun to most audiances. T his movie was fun for those who were clever enough to see past the bullshit and really find the main character who was endearing, even though you wanted to slap him through the entire movie for being "stupid".

Quote from The Libertine: "Allow me to be frank... you will not like me."

I had a ball at the movie, but I am one of those people who finds clever dialogue not matter what style of language it is in, entertaining. But like I said, there are no blowing up buildings, there are no exciting car chases. Hell, even when John Wilmot is being hunted by the King for insulting the King by making a play about dildo's and english men conquering the world....'s women.... there was no exciting chases. They just found John Wilmot six months later, a great deal sicker and minus one friend.

I am actually kinda curious about how the play the movie was based upon actually would be to see. It looks as though it would be really really good. And for those who love trivia, John Malkovich was in the play verision before he made the movie with Martha Plimpton. The play was written by Stephen Jefferys.

Recommendation: If you do not enjoy historical flicks, if long movies make you ill, it is not going to matter if you think that Johnny Depp is a brillant actor. It won't even matter if you think he is eye candy, you will not enjoy this movie. The language, the wit, was beautifully scripted, but if you do not appreciate movies that make you think forget it. The true genius of this movie was the dark humor filtered through the smokey glass of a historical piece about someone struggling to understand themself before they die and leave nothing behind. I adored and loved this movie and I am going to buy it as soon as I can get my hands on the dvd release most definatly. Yet, my tastes, are a bit on the dark side, and so this movie comes with my high recommendations, but not all are ready to spend almost two hours with this sort of movie.

To simplify: If you hated movies like Elizabeth, Vanity Fair, or Gangs of New York, forget about this movie. Exponge it from your mind.... I am not going to be blamed if you keep going to historical genre movies cause you read my review and now you hate me cause youc an't accept that I just might be a bit quirkier than you.

Envy me.
