An incident last night involving my 3 year old nephew (Hafiz whom I'll refer to as H2), a friend's daughter who is 4 years old (Atikah-A) and my 5 year old nephew (Haaziq - H1). Here's how the conversation went:-
H2: I want to dance! (then he started this mix of whining and near sobs) I want to dance!
Me: Then Dance!
H2: Cannot..I want to dance with her (points to A)
Me: Okay..then dance with A. A, why don't you dance with H2?
A: Cannot! I can only dance with H1.
Me: Why?
A: Because I am (she points to H1) her girl.
So A has a problem with pronouns. Kids these days..!
Anyway. Haaziq and Atikah have been bullying Hafiz by not permitting him to play with them. Haaziq has also taken on a very chivalrous role. Yup, this morning I overheard him saying to Atikah, "I like you. I like you so I won't say I win." Basically, he's allowing her to win their games now.
I don't remember being so girly or the boys being very boy when I was a kid. We played pretty a-gender roles as kids, as far as I can recall. I mean, the boys might have been rougher, and the girls less daring. But we played together all the same. I remember wrestling my boy-cousins. We used to jump off the swings after getting them as high as possible in my grandmother's house. Cuts and bruises. A win was a win. Boys never gave girls chances nor did the girls try and take advantage of their gender..we weren't as accutely aware of the differences back then. Or maybe, I just didn't mix with boys as often? And so my opinion is not well informed enough.
