The more I think about it, the more the idea of seeing if there's enough interest in Fredericton to start a go club appeals to me. I'd have to quit the math club (or, at least, stop taking quite as active a role in it) to make time, but I'm pretty sure I could do it. I have three go books, one of which is great for brand-new beginners, and the other two are good for slightly more advanced players. This summer, I will have two go sets (though only one will be any better than "embarrassing"), as well as a whole new bunch of books (I plan to get at least seven of them), all of which will be aimed at someone between 20k and 15k (KGS ranks are higher than everywhere else, so what they call 21k is actually closer to 18k anywhere else). I have the materials, especially if there are others who have go sets they'd be willing to bring to meetings. Heck, if I get -really- desperate, I can get some wood to make a few boards and just buy glass stones and plastic boards.
I'm just really sick of playing only on the computer. I noticed today that I'm getting too used to viewing things on a computer and I can't spot things as well on a real board. That's not good. I need to play in person some more, and there's not one person here that I know who's interested. I know one of my profs is willing to play and probably could be convinced to join. If we can have a prof in, maybe he could convince his department to lend us a room one or two nights a week. I know there are at least two other people who play go regularly, since I've seen them play. 8 people is how many we need to be recognized by the university and apply for funding, a space (if we're recognized, we don't have to pay), and the clout given to an official university club (which, if I'm lucky, will help attract others - more uni students are willing to join an official club than a outside club, and maybe we can use the "official university club" status to worm our way into STU's populace, too).
I know how to start up a club, since I've already helped start one. I'm passionate enough to put the effort in and spearhead the thing. If I take it easy next year with the workload and math club, I'll have the time. The only remaining question is that of interest. Are there enough people willing to play?
Maybe I'll open up a Canadian Go Players Lj community and pose the question there. :\
