I've always been a fan of good writing. I should qualify that statement: Since I've been a very young person, I've always admired the writings that made me think or feel or imagine great things. Good writing is hard to find, but GREAT writing is almost impossible to locate.
Richard Matheson has done both, and in more than one composure. He's demonstrated to me that he can be not only a good writer, but also a writer of greatest skill and vision in his books.
I'm speaking in particular of his book called "I Am Legend". A lot of people have seen the recent movie that Hollywood has produced, and although that movie is good indeed, they're missing the inspiration that caused the movie.
Mr. Matheson's book is pristine in it's treatment of heart, soul, motive, and despair. He has perfectly imagined a world where a man has been imprisoned, and most succinctly displayed how that lone soul struggles to best the forces against him.
My advice, read the book.
