Okay I'm still half NOOOO WTFEVEN and half OMG YASSSS over what happened in the ep so um. I'm reserving judgement on the parts that make me want to burn things until next ep? Like I'm hoping (perhaps stupidly) that they will be undone or deconstructed immediately because seriously SHUT UP. NO.
So I'll talk about what I loved under the cut. (All uncredited GIFs are mine. Let me know if you want them in a rebloggable set on tumblr.):
What I love about the culmination of this season is how much it's been foreshadowed, and I don't mean just the prophecy. THE STRUCTURE of it; the inevitability just makes me :DDDD. AND FOR ONCE IT WASN'T KLAUS bringing doom and retribution upon them because it seems he's actually learned his lesson! XDDDD It was Elijah and Freya holding to bloody Always And Forever; Family Above All despite the reprehensible cost.
We've had hints even from 2x22 ( I can't be bothered to GIF Elijah and Klaus on their own, sorry.):
Elijah: You brought that upon yourself! No, we have fought together for centuries, and once again, to break your enemy you broke your family.
Oooh the sweet blind hypocrisy, I LOVE IT. Especially when they were reprimanding Tristan and Aurora for prioritizing each other to extremes as if the Mikaelsons have the moral high ground when what they really have is the power of being unkillable. Might is still not always Right. (Although fandom is sooo swayed by it. The apologist posts in the tags are just loltastic.) Like I think Elijah is the most narratively boring of the Originals. What's more tedious than a static character? And yet his stolidness was a key factor in bringing this arc about JOKE IS ON ME. HaHAHA why are my non faves always higher up on the stupid call sheet I STG
Look at what Kol says in the flashback from 3x01 (A HOUSE DIVIDED hahahaha LOOK AT THE TITLE):
I would never have guessed Kol as the family part of the prophecy after he worked so hard to get back on good terms with them last season; spent his first day back alive helping out Klaus with his sireline enemy troubles despite wanting to be with Davina. But this makes total narrative sense: Kol isn't one of the default Always and Forever bunch. He's always been an outsider, he didn't swear that vow although they held him to it. Which used to make him resentful, (and briefly last season, happy to finally be included) but now it's going to make him truly VENGEFUL which is actually going to be A+++ even if I DESPISE the reason why. :((((
This Vincent scene was AMAZING:
"You destroyed somebody good today in order to save people who have had more than their share of lifetimes."
x And check out the foreshadowing from 2x22:
Also I think he's right about the Death thing, that it "twists [the Ancestors] up into something ugly." Because it's not True Death and peace/oblivion they experience- they're stuck in this Dark place for an eternity. The isolation of The Other Side seemed worse to me, but at least they could see what the Living were doing? Like why would you unleash not one but TWO unstoppable, bloodthirsty monsters on the city your descendents live in unless you don't really care that much about them continuing to live?
And finally Marcel! The finale is titled "The Bloody Crown" which brings about all sorts of delightful Jesus/Kingmaker allusions. :DDDD Now he will finally, FINALLY have the power to take back New Orleans. IT'S BEEN 84 YEARS (well three whole seasons but still.) Like it's always been an obvious no-contest? The hard power had always been with the Mikaelsons, no matter what tricks and allies and networks Marcel garnered. And even though Klaus oh-so-magnaminously granted Marcel back the French Quarter at the start of S3, he holds NO at Klaus' grace. The tenous nature of that can finally be overturned so I'm all !!! AT LAAAAST
I realized Marcel was The Beast as soon as I went back to GIF 3x01 for my Rebekol set and realized that was CMD with the Lucien teeth in. LOL Like come on try a little harder effects people:
And I find it hilarious that Narducci recently did an interview about
how Marcel finally realizes how expendable he is to the Mikaelsons when he's always known this? They left NO to burn and didn't even go back to see if he'd somehow survived, and in 2x22 he says this to Davina:
Well Davina you got your wish but you got lumped in with them. :((( But I am excited to see the prophecy unfold for real. LIGHT IT UPUPUP :DDDDDD
I'm so sad Lucien is really gone. :( He was awesome- snarky and calculating and FUN. But at least he went out with a bang: his last confrontation with Klaus and Hayley was TABLES TURNED PERFECT.
"A Queen and a King caught by a one time Pawn."
"Do you really want to measure your pride against my mercy?"
x LITERALLY SCREAMING. HOW GLORIOUS WAS THIS.
And Klaus ended him in a brutally perfect way too. UGH.
SPEAKING OF BRUTAL. LITERALLY TEARS OF BLOOD AND SOUL RENDING SCREAMS.
It's interesting how both Hayley and Vincent made reference to Davina being a kid, and Marcel's parental bond was especially stressed in the ep to reinforce that THIS IS A GIRL BEING SACRIFICED FOR STOLEN POWER.
AGAIN.
The pathos of it is bang on but seriously NOT MY FAVES TWO WEEKS IN A ROW. DAMMIT.
Danielle's interview
here, especially in concert with
this Plec blog about how Danielle and CMD filmed their final scenes together on the show is really making me worry- how can her availability be in question unless her series reg contract was cancelled? :((( Like are they just Jon Snow-ing us here?
There's also a glimmer of hope because she's still in the next ep- it's possible the Lifeblood Stone could be a prison world of some kind she can be rescued from. Right? RIGHT?
Also my shipper heart can't help but notice details like how we got another "I would die for you" reference from Kol. Like
that's four of them (five if you count the daggering.) Seriously just become mortal again already. You obviously can't rely on another witch to bring her back and this body is only good for destroying stuff. I was totally WTF-ing at him holding a knife to Van- why bother with a weapon?
I know the return to psychotic maniac Kol will be entertaining AF (and I am looking forward to him confronting Freya- fingers crossed we will see their bracelet again in the process), but I like Kol with a soul. Sigh.
