Recently crowned Australian of the Year and Australian country music icon Lee Kernaghan is coming to Townsville to kick off the Toyota Cowboys season.
Lee Kernaghan has dominated the charts with successive hit albums including Three Chain Road, 1959, Hat Town and Electric Rodeo making him hit maker of the decade and creating a new musical landscape along the way. He has done to country music in Australia what Garth Brooks did in the USA. He added a spectacular live show and along the way has sold over one million albums, won 25 CMAA Awards, 3 ARIA Awards, 8 hit albums and now with the release of his 9th album Spirit Of The Bush, his stellar career continues.
Cowboys CEO Peter Parr announced today that Lee has a special affinity with the Cowboys, and when approached, jumped at the chance to come to Townsville to wish the team well for the season.
“To quote Prime Minister Rudd when he announced Lee as the 2008 Australian of the year, Lee Kernaghan is truly an Australian to make us all proud. He loves the Cowboys, wrote and performed the club’s favourite song “Come on the Cowboys” and is by far the most popular entertainer to perform at our game days” Parr said.
Lee will attend the Toyota Cowboys Season Launch at Strand Park on Sunday March 9th and perform a number of songs including the club anthem “Come on the Cowboys, The Blue and the Grey”.
“This is a great honour to have Lee attend this free public event, and we thank our club sponsors, including Toyota, for helping to make this happen” Peter Parr said.
Lee Kernaghan was recently named Australian of the Year 2008 in front of Parliament House in Canberra. Lee was recognised for his support of country communities across Australia and described the award as the proudest moment of his life.
Prime Minister Rudd paid tribute to Lee for his dedication to helping others.
“Kernaghan's music resonates with every Australian by connecting us all to the spirit of the bush, but more importantly he gives hope and pride to those on the land when they need inspiration most," said the Prime Minister.
Lee Kernaghan will appear at the 2008 Cowboys Season Launch at Strand Park, Sunday March 9th form 3pm.
