I don’t know if this is what you meant, anon, but I hope it will suffice.
----
"What exactly do you see that makes you so bound and determined humans are going to change?"

The question comes as a surprise, in the dim of the room, and with the candles still cooling and the sweat drying on her skin, Allison glances over. Even in the dark she can still see the outline of a pretty face, familiar features, and yet different, somehow. He lays on his back with his hands behind his head, the silhouette of dusky cigarette smoke curling up towards the ceiling, swallowed by the darkness, where the bits of light fail to reach, or perhaps don’t dare to. There’s mystery in that darkness, and he seems to be studying it, perhaps trying to determine the answer to the question on his own.

She shifts onto her side and lays her head against his bare chest. It’s not nearly the same, is it? But she doesn’t despair, not outwardly; that’s just not what she does, and wouldn’t he be disappointed if she did? Not the one next to her, but the one who shares that same face. She doesn’t think about that now, but instead the question posed to her, even as he shifts an arm around her shoulders, to hold her, to toy with her hair.

"Everything you're not seeing, Tyki,” she says quietly, with that note of confidence that so rarely wavers. “Even in yourself. Your eyes may be open, but you don’t see."

He doesn’t reply; she doesn’t expect him to, because that’s not how he works, unless he cares to argue it. Instead, there’s simply quiet, the lit end of his cigarette glowing orange in the dark, barely reflecting in his eyes. She lays there for a while, wondering what he’s thinking. A mind like that seems like it would be a frightening thing to get lost in. It’s hard to tell whether an answer like that is acceptable, but since he doesn’t request elaboration, she decides that the conversation is best left for another time.

As she nods off to sleep there, in a strange bed that isn’t hers, with a man that isn’t hers, she stays not in spite of seeing what he cannot, but because she can see in him what he himself does not.
