"Dad?"
She knew he worked for the Ministry, but she'd no idea he was going to be at this thing. So even though she really had no interest in Games and Sports as a career, she made her way over to the table.
"Dad? What are you doing here?"

One one hand, he was excited about seeing his girls, especially Ashleigh... and though he didn't have as much of an opportunity to see Maible, he always looked forward to spending time with her as well. On the other hand, however, he was terrified of Ashleigh finding out about Maible. He didn't think that it would bother Maible as much -she'd put up with so much, after all- but he knew that it would crush Ashleigh. She would never understand being lied to for all these years.
"Dad? What are you doing here?"
His back was to the girl who'd spoken to him but he knew who it was. Just stay ( ... )

"Oh.. I think I'm a bit young for career day, still," she mumbled when she pulled away. "But I saw you over here and I had to come and say hello. Why didn't you tell me you were coming?!"

When they pulled apart, he was absolutely beaming. He did love it when Maible gave him affection. Honestly, he didn't feel that he deserved it from her... and when she hugged him, it felt like a little ray of sunshine directly from heaven.
He smiled when she said that she was too young for career day. She did have quite a while before she would have to decide on such things.
"I didn't know until yesterday," he offered, with a smile. Okay, that was a lie... but we're not keeping track of those. "I just go where they tell me to go," he continued.
He hadn't told either of his daughters. Honestly, he'd hoped to be reassigned at the last minute.
"Still happy to see me?" he questioned with a charming grin. "Even without advance warning?"

She had believed his lie easily enough, because it did sound plausible. Besides, it didn't matter much that she hadn't known. What mattered was that he was here and she was getting to see him!

He smiled at her when she told him that she was always happy to see him.
He really, honestly loved the girl, even if he had always put Ashleigh first. Maible's mother loved her... he knew this. Ashleigh didn't have that; Matthew was all she had. He couldn't ruin that for her. It wasn't the best situation for the younger of his daughters but he had to do what he had to do.
"You're on break?" he asked her. "Do you have a class after this?"
Matthew didn't have either of his girl's schedules memorized but he found himself wishing that he did. Maybe he would have more of a chance of keeping them separate if he did.

Luckily, though, she was blissfully ignorant of the situation.
"They're letting us out of one class to come to the fair, but then I'm having lunch with Tobias and I have Charms after," she told him, all but beaming as she mentioned her lunch date. Of course, her dad wouldn't know who Tobias was, but she was thrilled to be having lunch with a boy and he should be thrilled, too, right?
"I'm completely free after Charms, though," she added, hoping he'd take that hint and want to spend a little more time together. She hadn't seen him over Christmas at all, really, and while he'd sent nice gifts, she really just wanted some quality time with her dad.

Talking about boys with DAD. Yeah, that was weird.
Her eyes lit up as he asked about dinner. "Yes, that would be brilliant!" she told him, grinning from ear to ear. "Should I meet you right here? Or the entrance hall?"
Reply
"Then I'll not embarrass you any more," he told her. "You just let me know if things go okay, though. I'd hate to have to kill a boy."
He was teasing, of course, and his smile should've given that away. However, it didn't change the truth of the statement.
It made Matthew happy to see her face light up with the prospect of having dinner with her. Honestly, he was lucky that she didn't hate him for the way things had always been between them. "You can meet me in the Entrance Hall," he grinned. "Around six-thirty?"
If they met there, he had less of a chance at getting caught as they exited the castle... less room to cover.
"You'll have to dress warm for the walk," he told her with a smile, "even if we apparate part of the way, we'll have to get off of school grounds first."

She nodded at his suggestion of a meeting time and place. "Of course, Dad. I'll dress warm." She might have rolled her eyes if her mother had pulled that protective bit, but this was her Dad and she didn't see him often enough for it to get old from him. She was just really glad he was here!

"Ah, they don't make them like they used to," he said to no one in particular.

"So you want know about the most exciting branch of the Ministry of Magic do you? Well, I hate to break it to you I don't know anything. They just put me in charge 'cause I look great in the suit," he said with a smirk while straightening his tie. He hoped the boy caught his humour.
