Personality: Lyra tends to be a prop for people around her, generally keeping to herself unless some one takes an interest in her directly. As for her interactions with others - unless addressed, she revels in anonymity and lives by the quote: "I do not want people to be very agreeable, as it saves me the trouble of liking them a great deal" a la Jane Austen.
Lyra believes that the three most absorbing activities in the world are drawing, reading, and people-watching, and is very observant and quiet the majority of the time. Among her peers, she doesn't feel particularly awkward - just content to organize her thoughts before speaking. She's not entirely opposed to vulnerable social situations, but instead simply settles into her with an odd sort of contentment in herself.
Lyra may be a bit shy, but she isn't a total recluse - though eccentricity seems to have spread like wildfire in her family. She can't even remember having a secure stock of marbles in the first place for the distinct lack of marbles around her while growing up. She simply tends to blend in with the scenery, having an almost eerie sort of natural stealth that is neither intentional nor opposed by the girl. Always buried in a book or in her never-ending supply of sketch pads and drawing utensils sent from home, Lyra can be pulled back into reality easily, but it's considerably more difficult to keep her interest unless you're interesting yourself.
Needless to say, Lyra is intelligent. She's highly intuitive, but lacks much of the experience to back up her educated and mostly well-founded views on the world. However, unlike some, her rarely apparent but ever present naivete is not what is keeping her reasonably sane. On the contrary; her family is chock fully of the worldly and the well-traveled, though they are just as colorful and quirky as Lyra once beckoned from her cozy little shell. With intelligence comes passion and ardent determination, two qualities which are often the downfall of their aforementioned predecessor. Despite this fact so evident in the course of history, Lyra tries to keep her head level in situations that would normally rile her up. Usually, she can control herself when not in the presence of those she's close to with relative ease, thanks to her extensive study in silence.
Strengths: Lyra is very intuitive and perceptive. She's honest and loyal to the few she befriends closely, seeing no real point in clawing her way through dirty business and feeling no need to justify herself by "the means meet the ends" standards. She has a talent for drawing apparent from an early age. In accordance with her talent for art, Lyra excels at subjects relating to mathematical formulas. Though she is highly appreciative of literature, Lyra finds that she can only truly express herself through the many art mediums - mainly drawing by pencil and ink and has no exceptional way with the written word. However, Lyra's skills of comprehension help her tremendously in classes dealing with particularity and mathematical formulas such as Potions, Arithmancy, and even subjects related to various magical sciences such as Astronomy (her favorite class). Lyra is dedicated and studious, concentrating well and often getting lost in her favorite pastimes.
Weaknesses: Although Lyra is perceptive and able to analyze situations well, at times her trust in some can outweigh her judgment. This is not an unusual quality in girls of her age, but it is certainly a dangerous one. Her disaffected shyness often leads people to believe her snobbish. Honestly, Lyra is slightly elitist in that she chooses her friends carefully and often ignores those she finds annoying or uninteresting. Where school is concerned, she finds that she has a distinct lack of talent in practices dealing with the living creatures she studies such as Care of Magical Creatures and Herbology.
On top of this, Lyra has a terrible fear of heights and can't fly a broom properly to save her life, seriously lacking the physical finesse for flying and sport. In fact, she is rather devoid of grace, and though she isn't quite to the point where she would randomly fall on her face in the middle of a hallway, Lyra won't be winning any awards for ballet (something she admires greatly for both the dancing and music) or Quidditch any time soon.
Fears/Motivations: Lyra's greatest fear is to forget. She hates the idea of losing her thoughts, her mind, and herself as a person, though being forgotten by those around her who are not her loved ones oddly would not faze her much. She makes a point to make an impression of herself on those she loves, and an impression of a brighter existence on those she does not through anonymous random acts of kindness.
As far as long-term goals go, Lyra wants to become a professor at Hogwarts one day, eyeing the Astronomy position rather dreamily. She's just still unsure of the middle stepping stone between her education at the school and that particular prestigious standing.
History:
Lyra's father (Aleksandr Novikov) met her mother (Nola Foal) while studying in Britain to become a professor. He had come from a Russian wizarding family with reserves of wealth which were mostly compromised by scandals and piles of legal issues of the past, and was brought close to Nola by a chance encounter at a little-known bookstore as well as their shared magical ability. Because Aleksandr was eager to cut off ties with his family, he gladly agreed to stay with Nola in Britain after they became engaged two years later. The long engagement that followed provided the young couple with time to finish their studies, and graduate together from a prestigious university serving both their vested interests in teaching. Though Nola's family was extremely large and extremely colorful, it was less than financially fortunate with their funds constantly being drained by expeditions and travels for work. 'Work' usually relative to the arts and exploration, of the enjoyable as opposed to lucrative kind. Nola was able to complete her education with the help of a ton scholarships as well as the help of her fiance, who managed to inherit a decent sum of his family's more well-kept money following the death of his mother (good riddance).
After finishing up the immigration process and getting off their feet, Lyra's parents settled into a home in the English countryside where Lyra's father taught as a professor in a private, college-like organization for some of the brightest Wizards and Witches in the wider region. Soon, Lyra herself was on the way into a somewhat priviledged existence.
Lyra's childhood was full of riddles and books, art and music. Her extended family was extremely close and everyone seemed to come and go from the Novikov villa (which seemed to fool everyone with its technically accurate name, being reasonably sized though well-furnished and truly, warmly homely) at will, teaching the child of their travels and sometimes even taking her along on trips to foreign lands both near and far. When her letter arrived, no one was surprised but celebration ensued without a hitch.
Upon enrollment to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Lyra continued taking a trip each summer, collecting a new object of sentimental and unique though hardly expensive or extravagant value from each destination. Her family members always provided companionship for the only child. Suddenly thrust into the endless flow of students near or of her age, Lyra found an occasional retreat from the unfamiliar interactions with her peers in drawing and reading. Though she hasn't found anyone who can pry her from behind the pages for too long just yet, Lyra remains hopeful that Hogwarts has more to offer her than an good education yet.
