Ken never placed a much emphasis on scoring well in any of his classes, which is why I didn't load him up with an O in anything but Muggle Studies. (If he did badly there, I'd have to mock him.) He is, however, solid in most of his work. It's not that he's exceptional at Charms so much as it is that he's a solid guy that Dumbledore would trust to come in and take a class that needs teaching. He does understand the subject, I just don't want to build him up as amazing at it. Maybe he is, but I don't think he'd have cared to score that way per se.

As for him being a less than shiny character, I'd say Ken doesn't see himself as questionable, exactly. At first glance, with the tattoos and the quirky he might not seem like the kind of influence you want teaching kids, but he is a good guy. He wouldn't actively encourage kids to rebel or anything, he just is who he is and people can do with that what they will. I guess, long story short (too late) Ken doesn't see himself as questionable and anyone that knows him- past just appearances- knows that while he may be irresponsible himself on occasion, he wouldn't be irresponsible with other people or take the job lightly.

I kind of based Ken's professorship off of the feeling I get from Lupin in the books. It's not necessarily that he was awesome at DADA or that he'd planned to be a teacher, but he was someone who WAS good at it and someone willing to come in and fill the position. He was someone Dumbledore knew and remembered and could look up to say, hey, could you do this for me? I don't think all teachers are GREAT at their subject, but they at least like it and know it well enough to teach others how to do it. Maybe I'm being too technical. I can up his scores to an O if that makes people feel better but I like Ken as being more of a regular kind of guy who's stepping in. (I guess maybe he is that good at Charms but in my head he thinks an O looks like he's trying too hard. I will change it if people want me to.)
