Elanor was sitting on one of the couches in the common room, enjoying the fire crackkling in front of her. She had a book on Muggle inventions sitting next to her, although at the moment, she was writing in a leather-bound journal.

It had been such a nice day. She smiled softly to herself, reflecting on her walk out by the lake. Things had been bad for a while, but it looked like maybe life was beginning to look up.

After a few moments, she finished writing what she wanted to in her journal and closed it. Then, she opened the book of inventions, ready to enjoy a quiet night of reading.

Calie wandered down from her dorm room. Sometimes sitting alone and reading was just a really sad and boring way to spend the time. Even if she hated interacting with other people she hardly knew, she figured it was better than listening to the wind slam at the window paine. Elanor's red hair stood out in the common room, and Calie figured she might as well go and see how she was doing.

She didn't really know Elanor that well, of course, but it was better than sitting along and looking forlorn. Calie figured the best way to not look like a loser was making up your mind that you wanted to talk to someone before you even got there. That way you already knew you were going to start a conversation instead of just standing there in an awkward silence waiting for them to notice you.

"Hey, Elanor!" Calie said pleasantly before sitting down in a nearby chair, "How was your Friday?" she asked.

Elanor fumbled her book slightly as a voice cut through her relative quiet. She looked up to see Calie sitting down in the chair next to the couch. Elanor didn't mind her so much; Calie was usually non-intrusive and well-mannered.

The 5th year place a book mark to mark her place. "Hello Calie." She replied politely. Even though they were in the same house, Elanor really didn't know Calie that well. There were few people that Elanor knew at all well, because she was usually reserved and shy.

"It was a nice Friday." As soon as Elanor answered, she thought about Denys and her cheeks turned pink. "And yours? Have you been well?"

Calie shrugged, sure... no things hadn't been going well but she wasn't about to unload all of that on to a total stranger! That wasn't very cool. "It was lovely, thank you. And I've been very well!" Calie said with a wide smile.

Okay Calie, maybe a little too wide... tone it down a little, she let her grin drop just a bit. Now it was more like a regular smile.

Then Calie realized that, wait a minute, she didn't have anything else to say. What else were they going to talk about? She could always go on about the weather, but that was just... unoriginal and besides, it was just the weather? How was that interesting. Calie looked around quickly for some ideas and spotted Elanor's book.

"What are you reading? If I may ask?" Calie said, again with the politeness.

Elanor relaxed slightly as the conversation seemed to progress. She always felt a bit tense when people she didn't know very well approached her. However, Calie seemed to not have any ulterior motives, and that was enough reassurance for Elanor in her own common room.

"That's good." She replied to the girl. Good days all around. Maybe winter was the new spring-time.

When Calie asked about the book, Elanor broke into a smile. She loved talking to other people about Muggle stuff. It was just all so fascinating.

"It's a book about Muggle inventions of the last 100 years... well... it was written several years ago, but it's about inventions in the 1900s." She turned the book slightly, so that the other girl could read the cover. "They made so many things! And all without any magic at all."

Calie's eyes brightened at the mention of any sort of Muggle Studies topic, "OH!" She exclaimed in excitement, "You like Muggle Studies too?" Calie wondered how she did not know this before and they had never gotten together to talk about the class, "It's my favourite class!" She sat forward on her chair, getting ready for a discussion.

"They have! The 1900s were like a boom for inventions, all because of the light bulb and energy plants. And not only here but outer space as well! And they did it all without magic! Very remarkable. Though, I'm not sure my favourite years are in the 1900s, more so around the time of the industrial revolution."

Elanor didn't know that Calie took Muggle Studies, probably because they were in different years. She never paid much attention to other people around the common room, so if Calie was the type to be there reading on the subject, Elanor would never have really noticed.

"It's my favourite class, too." A lot of students preferred the magic classes, where you got to learn spells and do stuff. Elanor understood that they were very practical, and an important part of her heritage. But that also made them less exciting for her. She had grown up around magic--but Muggles seemed different, exotic, and exciting to her ( ... )

Calie laughed happily at her last remark, she now remembered that Elanor was a pureblood. "Yeah, my gran used to take me to see the movies all of the time! I remember going to see The Little Mermaid. I got so scared at one point I was practically on top of her lap." Calie grinned at the memory of her grandma.

"I think I was too young to understand what was going on when the really important shuttle launches took place. I vaguely remember my rents watching one of them on the telly." Calie tried recalling the fuzzy memory of her dad standing on top of the bar trying to move the antennas around so that the picture was clearer. "Yeah, they relied on science. Something that most wizards and witches would probably never be able to grasp."

Through all of her time in the wizarding world, she had never been ashamed of her background. She had never let the elitists change her mind about her worth.

Elanor tried to imagine what it would have been like to go to the movies with her grandmother. It was a very strange thought. "I wasn't allowed to go out and go to the cinemas when I was growing up." She told Calie. "It sounds like it was a lot of fun, though."

The next comment really caught her attention, though. Calie's family watched space shuttles launch--on a tellyvision. That was very impressive. Using one device to watch another really cool device... "Did you take science classes, before you came to Hogwarts?" Elanor had always been very interested in how the Muggleborn students went to school before they came to Hogwarts, because she had never been to another school.

"Before I came to Hogwarts," Calie said biting her bottom lip, "I was home schooled." She said with a shrug. She suddenly felt a whole lot less interesting now. She couldn't pass on any insights about muggle education, because she herself had been taught differently than the norm.

"My gran taught me everything she knew. My parents were too busy running the Inn and bar they owned. We also lived out in the middle of nowhere, which didn't really help with that." Calie said with a shrug.

"I did, however, get taught basics about history, and I got to learn Irish from my gran too. None of the subjects were really in-depth. Usually you get taught the specifics when you went to muggle high school."

Elanor nodded. "I was taught at home too, by my family and some tutors. It's a nice way to learn--you get a lot of individual attention, and if you don't understand you can ask as many questions as you like." She had appreciated the individual pace of learning at home. At Hogwarts, you couldn't ask too many questions, or you'd annoy your classmates.

"I didn't know that some Muggles didn't go to schools, and others did. That's very interesting. Most books just talk about Muggle schools--I wonder why they don't mention the learning at home, too?"
