Aislin was genuninely pleased by the sound of welcome in Professor Sly's voice. It was nice not to have to tip-toe for fear of upsetting him. He really was possibly her favourite professor, even if Astronomy wasn't the class that she had a natural talent with. "Thank you, I would have come earlier but I was looking over my Transfiguration notes, and trying to remember if I had included all of the citations that I wanted to." She would worry endlessly until she got her marks back from each of her professors. It was usual, but having been out of comission for a week seemed to have increased that worry.
"Well, you've chosen a good night, seems that some of the haze has lifted, you might get fair visibility."
The Slytherin smiled at the comment- yes, it didn't seem too bad. It was forecast to snow tomorrow, and she wondered when it would start. Certainly it wouldn't for more than a few hours, but it didn't stop her from drawing her cloak around her and willing herself not to shiver. She watched him approach, and made sure to stand up just that little bit taller, "I'm well, thank you," she told him.
"I'm a little tired, but I should expect that at this hour," her face took on an incredulous look as she glanced at the professor. "How do you do it?" she asked. "I mean, staying awake each and every night, and yet I see you at mealtimes, and during the day. You must not get very much sleep."

Sly nodded with understanding. It was so nice to see that some students still had their priorities straight. It was especially reassuring in students from such prestigious families as Aislin--too many students were becoming blemishes on their family trees these days. "You must make your family very proud, Aislin."
He glanced out across the grounds toward the heavens and smiled. It was an excellent night for viewing, or as excellent as the UK in December could be. He breathed the cool, night air in deeply. Invigorating.
Then he returned his attention to the girl. "Well, I do nap during the day, and sleep for a couple of hours between sunrise and breakfast." His eyes twinkled a little. "And on those particularly long nights I drink a lot of tea, and sometimes even indulge in a little Pepper Up potion."
Really, though, Sly was the kind of person who slept very little. He didn't seem to need as much sleep as other people--and while some people loved sleeping, he looked at it as a bit of an inconvenience.
"Speaking of, if you'd like some tea, I was thinking of preparing a pot for myself. Plus, it might take away some of the chill for you." Sly had noticed how she pulled her cloak a little tighter around her body. He was used to the cold himself, plus his body provided a little more natural insulation than the slender frame of Aislin.

Wasn't making her family proud what Aislin simply lived to do? So far she had tried- her biggest goal was to live up to the family name. "I hope so," she said quietly. It would be presumptuous to say 'I do', and even so Aislin had failings. She should have been a boy, and that was the greatest disappointment of all.
It seemed strange, and perhaps it made her feel a little like an intruder when Sly seemed to flush with health as he stared out across the grounds. Aislin liked her personal time, and perhaps he liked his. He had told her that she could come whenever she wanted, so she kept that in mind and forced out feelings of inadequacy. He wouldn't be welcoming her if he wanted to spend the time alone.
He made it sound as though the fluctuating schedule wasn't too bad. Aislin was reluctant to agree, although she had sampled his tea and could not deny that he knew how to make it. She had never, however, been fond of Pepper Up Potions. They tasted quite awful, and she had known people to become dependant on them (which she did not approve of). She nodded in unserstanding, although the idea did not appeal to her as much as routine did.
"That would be nice," Aislin replied to his offer. Oh yes, she was very fond of Professor Sly, he knew how to have manners. She gave him a sweet smile, then pulled out her star chart, and his original version of the notes that he had permitted her to borrow. She was rather grateful for them. "Thank you for the use of your notes," she said.

"Don't be silly, of course you do." Sly said affirmatively. Obviously, Aislin wasn't thinking of what some other parents had to deal with. The Caustius family had to be positively ecstatic that Aislin was not only a bright girl with talent, but that she also hadn't abandoned tradition.
With that, he set about preparing some tea. He made his way to a cabinet against the wall, and as he took out his tea pot and a bag of pleasantly aromatic jasmine tea, he whistled quietly, yet merrily, to himself. With a prod of his wand, he managed to bring the kettle to boiling in almost no time, and soon enough he was pouring piping hot cups for two.
"Quite alright," Sly said as he took his notes back and placed them on his desk. "Not a problem at all, and, here you go." In return he handed her one of the cups. He took a sip from his tea. Excellent--it was just as he liked it.
"Let me show you something." Sly said enthusiastically. Immediately he stood up and unlocked a different door to the cabinet. From it, he withdrew an incredibly ornate telescope. It appeared incredibly complex, with extra lenses on hinges, countless knobs, and intricate engravings covering its entire length. He clearly adored this instrument, carrying it with great reverence as he returned to his desk. "One of the finest wizarding telescopes ever made! You can make observations even through the thickest of cloud covers with this fine specimen."

Aislin nodded, she didn't want to seem like she was whining. There was modesty, and then there was complaining. It was a fine line, but Aislin liked to think that she could successfully walk it. She watched with interest as he began to make the tea. It was interesting to watch- she was so used to seeing him in a classroom setting that it was quite different to watch him do something that she rarely associated with class.
Truth be told, she was now beginning to associate tea with Astronomy, which was remarkably strange but not without some type of sense. Tea was a mark of good breeding, sometimes. She handed him the notes and accepted the tea, "thank you," she replied. She took a slow sip and smiled at him, "you're right, it does help to keep the cold away."
She wondered what the proper topic of discussion was for a situation like this one- should she talk about how there was snow predicted for tomorrow? Should she inform him that the Slytherin Dungeons needed the heating charms renewed? He saved her from having to invent a topic, and his excitement was infectious. She sipped her tea, pressing down familiarity and too much interest and curiousity.
The instrument that he returned with filled her with awe. She was used to pretty things, used to finery, used to precious things... but not all of them had a use. This telescope was quite obviously grand, and complicated, and she had to wonder whether it was an heirloom, or whether he had purchased it himself. Aislin reached out a hand to tentatively touch the engravings. Really, she did want a closer look, and more time to examine it. Did the engravings mean anything? Were they possibly ancient runes to magnify and manipulate the magic and...
"It's a beautiful tool," she whispered breathlessly. "You love Astronomy, don't you?" It was a silly question, he was the professor of the subject, and he owned such a marvelous telescope... if he didn't, he certainly did a good job of pretending.
