Wednesday February 28th, During Afternoon 3illyria_cartierJuly 16 2008, 05:18:35 UTC
Illyria was in the Library, as was usual for her Wednesday afternoon while Atticus was in Astronomy. Currently she was reviewing that day's double Potions lecture, with some difficulty. Never being the natural at that particular course she always found herself taking much longer to do homework with Potions than anything else.
Sigh, she wished she could be done with it so she could get back to her book. She cast a long look at her book bag, debating whether or not she should take a ten minute break to read the next chapter, but decided against it. She picked up her Potions book and started from the beginning of the chapter again.

Danny noticed that Illyria had turned all the way back to where she'd started from. Good Lord, why? Did the girl have a Potions Problem?
He picked up his own work and headed over to her. He at least recognized her from various places, and he knew of her family -- good start, right? Danny kept reminding himself that he was supposed to be being Friendly. That meant all the time.

Illyria peered over at the newcomer from behind her giant book. "Ah, hello Daniel," she said politely, lowering her book a little now that she knew who it was. He was pureblood, and therefore she was to be civil in his company.
She gave him a curious look, wondering why he chose to come and sit with her when they rarely spoke. Ah well, perhaps he'd make his reasons known.

"How are you?" Danny offered, opening his own book. He hadn't spoken to Illyria in... ages. Actually he wasn't sure if they'd ever had a Real Conversation? In any case, that made things awkward.
Re: Wednesday February 28th, During Afternoon 3illyria_cartierJuly 17 2008, 00:46:39 UTC
"Fine, thank you. And yourself?" she asked, flipping the page. Because Illyria was usually uncomfortable in social situations she had come to terms with awkwardness, and so she could proceed normally.
At his question about Potions she gave a short nod, multitasking as she looked for the section that would explain where she was confused. "I'm afraid my brother got the bulk of the Potions talents in the family, my areas of expertise are more in Transfiguration and Arithmancy."

"I'm all right." Danny had his own parchment and quill out quickly, beginning to take his neat and tidy notes. "It hasn't been a bad term for me at all so far."
She was obvious looking for something. "Have you tried stringing things into songs to help you remember them?" Danny suggested, tilting his head. "What are you looking for?"
Re: Wednesday February 28th, During Afternoon 3illyria_cartierJuly 17 2008, 01:14:06 UTC
Illyria followed suit with the parchment, pulling it out and setting up her ink and quill so they would be ready when she found the answer she was looking for. "That must be good for you, I've found this term to be quite enjoyable myself."
In regards to what she was looking for, it was something that she should remember although she couldn't quite put her finger on it. "I'm supposed to be looking for the properties of Jobberknoll feathers," she said, slightly frowning. "I know it's around this chapter somewhere but..Aha, here we are." She very quickly realized why she should have remembered this. "Of course, it has to do with Memory Potions." Oh, irony.
Re: Wednesday February 28th, During Afternoon 3christianishJuly 17 2008, 01:31:50 UTC
Danny laughed softly. "So that's a no on the songs, then?" It was of course ironic that she couldn't remember something to do with Memory potions, and he felt a little bad for laughing at her, but he couldn't help it. "Do you usually have trouble remembering things?"
Re: Wednesday February 28th, During Afternoon 3illyria_cartierJuly 17 2008, 01:41:17 UTC
"Oh, yes sorry. I have never actually tried that, but that is interesting. Do you do that often?" Illyria was always curious to see how other people retained all the information they had to memorize for their coursework.
She didn't mind his laughing at her. She may be proud, but she could appreciate something humorous when it was. "Not usually. I admit, I'm a little distracted today. I'm reading a very good book at the moment and I'm eager to get back to it. Do you ever find that? When you're right in the middle of a particularly intriguing part and then you just cannot concentrate on anything else?" It happened to her from time to time, and she supposed today was most absolutely one of those days. She supposed that tonight she would just have to finish it to ensure it wouldn't distract her from her Potions homework anymore.

Shrugging, Danny noted something on his parchment. "I do for things that don't interest me. For Potions I don't have to, but yeah -- it's a memory trick that works fairly well." He was a very good student, even in classes he wasn't good at, mostly because Danny spent almost all his damn time studying.
When she mentioned a really good book, he grinned. "Yeah. It's annoying, isn't it? The one thing you want to read, you can't, because you have obligations -- but you can't get it off your mind!" Every bookworm knew this as a pure form of torture. "I usually just try and finish the book and then get back to work, 'cause I know I'm useless otherwise."

"I can't say I've heard of anybody I know using that particular method before, but I suppose if it's effective than kudos to you." Illyria would make a mental note to ask Atticus if he had ever heard of songwriting as a study tactic later that evening.
"It really is," she agreed wholeheartedly. "I've been trying to test myself with this one to see if I can savour it but I really don't think I can stand to be distracted from this if I'm forgetting Memory Potions, of all things. I think I will just have to set everything aside and finish it tonight."
Re: Wednesday February 28th, During Afternoon 3christianishJuly 17 2008, 03:17:57 UTC
"Try it," the redhead suggested. "If it doesn't work, it still won't hurt anything. Right?" He finished that piece of parchment and moved on to a new one, writing quickly.
When Illyria said she would just read it, the Ravenclaw nodded. "Just read through it," Danny said wisely. "What are you reading, by the way?"
Re: Wednesday February 28th, During Afternoon 3illyria_cartierJuly 17 2008, 03:28:06 UTC
Illyria gave a small shrug. "I'm not sure, I'm not a very vocally musical person," she admitted. "I might keep it in mind, though."
She continued to jot down all of the properties of Jobberknoll feathers as she spoke. "It's a historical fiction set during the Muggle witch hunts," she explained. "It's mostly about the pureblooding families of the time. It has a selection of small stories about how different families living in different areas were affected by them. It sounds quite dull when I explain it, but I assure you it's really very good."
Re: Wednesday February 28th, During Afternoon 3christianishJuly 17 2008, 04:53:54 UTC
"It sounds nice," Danny said. He personally liked to read Muggle books about chemistry and physics, as well as Muggle science fiction. He couldn't admit that to her, which he knew, so he didn't bother trying. He ran a hand through his hair and coughed.
Honestly he really wanted to know what she was thinking. He knew that most people who were really into being Pureblooded had lots of reasons not to like him, but she was being polite. Why?
Re: Wednesday February 28th, During Afternoon 3illyria_cartierJuly 17 2008, 05:56:41 UTC
She nodded and turned back to her work. She was starting to get in full study mode now that she had figured out what she needed to get this essay underway.
However, she was still curious as to why he had struck up conversation in the first place. The two of them had never spent an extended period of time in the other's company, except for sightings in the Common Room or at the table for meals. In any case, she found him to be pleasant enough, and although she knew about his being a Pureblood she was not particularly well-informed of his personal life, probably due to the mass amounts of isolation her family experienced while at home. In any case, she had not received instructions from her family not to talk to this particular individual, so she was content to be where she was.
Sigh, she wished she could be done with it so she could get back to her book.
