Your assignment this week is Bindlegnomes.

So named for their affinity for collecting fabric and rolling it up in a bundle to be carried around wherever they go, this particular breed of gnome has come to be labeled a pest in recent times though they were once quite popular. Bindlegnomes love cloth of any kind and are well known for stealing socks, scarves, and any other small, easily missed article of clothing. In spite of this, they are actually quite friendly toward persons with magic and will sometimes seek out witches or wizards to live with simply to be near by magical goings on. They have a tendency to present their keepers with gifts of fabric when they are particularly pleased, though whether or not the item was yours to begin with doesn't seem to matter much to them. Bindlegnomes will do most anything they are asked if you give them a nice bit of cloth and because of this they were once kept as the "poor man's house elf". However, their role as helping hands largely fell out of popularity in the 1700s because of their compulsive need to touch things and their tendency to unfold clothes simply to roll about in them. Also, if they're fond of what you're wearing they can become quite cuddly.

Your task is to observe your Bindlegnome and see what he or she likes. Talk to them, see if you can get them to perform a task for you. There is an assortment of fabric in this box at the front of the class and I suggest you experiment to see what your Bindlegnome likes. (Keep an eye on any loose articles of clothes you may have. I will not be held responsible should these go missing. You've been warned.) These are friendly, well mannered creatures and I'll ask you don't abuse them with your requests. If I see anyone being cruel you'll receive detention and a reminder that this course is entitled Care of Magical Creatures. Have fun!

Bindlegnomes? Hmm. Derek looked back at the creature on his desk after reading the assignment and had to pull it's little hands from his tie. Well, useful or not, there was a perfectly good reason for keeping this class and that was that at least it was low stress- most days. Derek was hoping for some more interesting creatures at the higher level but he was okay with working up to it. All of the other classes he'd kept had certainly picked it up so a slow class was fine by him.

"Hello there." The gnome was practically at eye level standing on the desk and he seemed rather intrigued with Derek's tie. "No, that one's mine," he instructed clearly, moving the little hands away once more. "Let's see what else we have for you, yeah?"
