Monday February 27th - Gryff Table - Suppertime beccymac January 13 2007, 07:51:25 UTC
Beccy rolled her eyes as she pushed her supper around on her plate and listened to a nearby group of her housemates talking about their weekend - what boys they snogged or wanted to snog and that sort of thing. Couldn't they see there were more important things to think about? Sometimes she felt so out of place here, not caring about boys or quidditch or not any of the trivial stuff that most of her classmates seemed to be focused on.

She caught a familiar profile out of the corner of her eye, though, and her whole demeanor changed. Supper was quickly forgotten and she ran towards the man who'd just entered the Great Hall, wrapping her arms around him in a tight hug.

"Daddy! What are you doing here?" She was genuinely confused, because she'd just seen Granddad at the career fair and he hadn't said a word about Dad coming around. But she was also unmistakably happy to see him. No doubt about it, Rebecca MacAlaister was definitely a Daddy's Girl.

It had only been a few hours since Mac had reassigned him to Hogwarts. The job was the job. He loved his job -always had- so he didn't question his orders in the least. Besides, this new station put him closer to Beccy and that, in his eyes, at least, was always a good thing.

After arriving and getting settled into his quarters, he'd headed to the Great Hall. A man had to eat, right? He was not, by any means, checking up on said daughter.

Of course, honestly, he had no reason to 'check up' on her. She was a wonderful child. He simply wanted to see her. Really, who could fault him for that?

As he entered, his eyes began to scan the Gryffindor table for a head of bright red hair. Before his eyes could really finish the search, he had a set of arms wrapped around him. His own arms, instantly, closed around the girl.

"I... well, I'll be living here for a while," he explained with a smile. "New orders... you know how the 'old man' can be," he teased.

That was the best news Beccy had heard in a good while. Dad was going to be living at Hogwarts for awhile? That was great! She gave him a light punch on the arm, though, which was more intended for her granddad, but it wasn't like she could reach him. It was kind of like that whole 'shoot the messenger' thing.

"That prat! I saw him just the other day at that career thing and he didn't say a word!" she grumbled, pouting slightly. One might be amused to note that she looked very much like Mac when she grumbled like that. Except, of course, for the red hair and the fact that she resembled her mother more than anyone.

Cal laughed when his daughter punched him in the arm.

"Like I said," he continued to tease, though he father wasn't exactly there to defend himself, "you know how the old man can be."

Cal was very happy to be with his daughter. She always seemed to take the worn look off of his face. The look that had appeared when Cara had gotten hurt.

"What's for dinner?" he questioned, looking back over the Gryffindor table again. "Am I allowed to sit with my daughter or would you rather me eat up there with the teachers."

He knew for a fact that his daughter wasn't like most teenagers. He knew that she wouldn't be embarrassed by his joining her but he liked to pick at her anyway. Besides, if he could, occasionally, be a little silly with Beccy... he'd never be that way.

Beccy laughed, because they did both know how her grandfather could be. He wasn't one to just volunteer information or anything. She'd still be sending him an letter to whinge about not being told, though.

But right now. Right now she was going to enjoy seeing that smile on her dad's face, because it appeared so rarely ever since her mom had gotten hurt. She didn't say anything and she didn't overtly try to cheer him up, because it was an understood thing... they both missed her, but they didn't talk about it. They just sucked it up and carried on with life, because crying about it wouldn't change anything.

"Come and see," she informed him, answering both questions as she grabbed his hand and dragged him back to the Gryffindor table with her. She didn't care at all if she was weird for eating supper with her dad, because she loved him and she loved that he was here and she wasn't about to be ashamed of that.

Once situated at the Gryffindor table, he grinned at his daughter then began to pull food onto his plate. "So how was the career fair?" he questioned, making idle conversation as he began to eat. "Have you found a new path or do you still intend to follow in my footsteps?"

To be perfectly honest, he didn't, exactly, fancy the thought of his only daughter becoming an auror. (Mostly because he worried about her safety.) However, he didn't, exactly, have the right to tell her that he disagreed with her decision either. Besides, she was just as stubborn as his father and expressing a dislike in her choice could, very well, cement it.

Beccy's eyes widened and she laughed at his question. As if she was ever going to change her mind about that.

"Nope, I didn't even both to look at the other booths," she told him, shaking her head as she pushed a small forkful of food into her mouth. "I'm definitely going to be an Auror."

There was no need to look elsewhere, because Beccy had known what she wanted to be since she was five. Losing Mum at twelve had only cemented the choice for her.

Cal simply laughed and shook his head. Of course she hadn't looked at the other booths. What was the fun in that? Who wanted to be educated about the other jobs in the wizarding world? Certainly not Beccy MacAlaister!

Once he'd fixed his plate and poured himself some pumpkin juice (one beverage he rarely had now that he was grown and out in the 'real world') he began to eat, smiling, occasionally, at his girl.

"So tell me daughter," he said, the 'daughter' being a clear sign that he was teasing her, "which of these boys should I threaten while I'm here? I do look forward to ruining your social life and making all the boys think twice about talking to my daughter."

He knew that Beccy wasn't the type to be worried with such things but he did enjoy teasing her.

Beccy rolled her eyes as she helped herself to some more mashed potatoes.

"Have you seen the miscreants that go to this school?" she asked as if that should settle things. Oh, she had a few boys who were good friends, but there wasn't anyone she could even think about dating, if she were even into that sort of thing.

Who cared about boys, anyway, when there were crusades to be fought and classes to study for. Getting rid of Corina Mayfield, finding out who REALLY killed Kiri, keeping an eye on Zak... these were the things that really mattered. Boys and dating were just trivial matters that she didn't have time for.

Cal could only laugh at her comment.

His daughter really was an original... and he loved it. Though he wished that she didn't worry so much about things outside of Hogwarts, he couldn't fault her for it; she'd been raised by aurors, after all.

Beccy understood the fight better than anyone and she'd experienced, first hand, what some sacrificed for it.

Miscreants, indeed.

As he continued to eat, he took a bit of a serious tone. "Have you heard anything?" he questioned. "About the party, I mean. Something that wouldn't make it two auror ears?"

He knew that he, probably, shouldn't speak so freely with his daughter but he never kept anything from Beccy. Besides, he'd rather know that she was educated enough to protect herself. It gave him a little bit of comfort in a world gone to shite.

Yep, that was Beccy. One of a kind. But, then, no one else had who she did for a grandfather, did they, and that made all the difference.

She shook her head as her dad asked (again) about the party.

"Sorry, dad, I haven't heard anything new, nothing I haven't already told you," she told him, leaning forward to take a drink of her pumpkin juice. "You know I'd tell you if I had."

Pause.

"I can do some digging, though, see what I can find out."
