Saturday, March 4th, Breakfast at the Puff Table! anora_bee January 12 2007, 04:11:53 UTC
Anora felt a LITTLE apprehensive about sitting at the Puff table, as apparently there were all of these HOUSE PRIDE issues going on right now, but whatever, she was with her friends, did she care? NOPERS, that's what.

She was sitting beside Taylor and Derek and Hannah were on the opposite side of the bench. Yummm, breakfast. And hey, it was Saturday. Sadly, breakfast time did not include the possibilities of her beloved sandwiches, but there WAS bacon. And that was always a reason to enjoy the morning. "So, it is a Saturday," she pointed out rather obviously. "What's the plan?" she looked around at the lot of them expectantly while picking up a piece of bacon.

"Well," Taylor yawned dramatically and stretched his arm out and around Anora's shoulder, "I have to make an appearance at the match at some point, as I am sure you will too.." Taylor said and took a drink of juice. "You're wanting to go too eh?" He said, she nodded.

"But up until that point, I am free. Maybe we should go and make some snow angels or somethin'" Taylor offered with a smirk to Anora beside him. As he held her gaze, he stealthily stole a piece of bacon off of her plate.

"An appearance?" Derek gave his best mate an amused look. "Merlin, you are a horrible brother." To accentuate his point he the remainder of his toast at Taylor. Of course Derek was planning on catching the game. There were Darin and Anya to cheer on and Quidditch in general to keep on top of. He was really hoping Gryffindor would lose but, well, either way Ravenclaw was still behind.

He rolled his eyes at the bacon stealing. His mate was not nearly as smooth as he thought he was. "Snow angels? Seriously?" Given that it was the four of them they were talking about, Derek found it much more likely that they'd end up building forts and starting a snowball fight. Actually, that didn't sound like such a bad idea.

Hannah had walked into the Great Hall with her friends, and when they all decided to eat at the Hufflepuff table. And yes, Hannah most certainly did notice Rupert making some random comment and moving down to the end of the table. Something about chair kicking and ice cream. Possibly about her Dad, too. What a ponce!

Today, being Saturday March fourth, was Nathaniel's birthday. She'd gotten him a gift and everything, and would have to make some sort of plans with him later. Pranks, perhaps.

Anyways, Hannah really didn't care about the stupid Quidditch game. But she did support Derek and Anora... and Taylor. Whatever, she would probably go. Unless something else came up. Something more fun. Maybe she'd have to make up her own fun.

"Snow angels? That sounds lame. Unless it's a euphemism, in which case I completely support it." She reached for her apple juice and took a sip. Yes, it was starting to look like it would be a fun weekend. Much less stress than the Career Fair, at least.

Ahh yes, the Quidditch game. "I definitely want to be making an appearance for Gryffindors inevitable triumph," she said, perhaps a little loudly as it earned her a few glares from other Hufflepuffs sitting nearby. She rolled her eyes at them before grabbing some orange juice.

Sliding closer to Taylor when he put his arm around her, she was about to tell Derek that she happened to think snow angels were pretty damn fun if snowball fights occured shortly afterward, but instead she gave Hannah a confused look. "Err, a euphemism for what, exactly?" she couldn't hold back a bit of a laugh. Oh, Hannah.

Shortly afterwards, she turned her attention back to her plate to eat the piece of bacon she had been saving for last, as it had certainly been the most delicious looking. Only to her horror, it was gone. "Hey.." she said, and then looked over at Taylor. "Oh, very funny," she said, thwapping him on the arm.

Taylor ignored Derek's jive, "I am the best brother in the world. I hate quidditch, but I am still going to go and sit through it for the fam." He rolled his eyes. Making an appearance was enough as far as he was concerned.

He laughed at Hannah and answered Anora, "A snow orgy," he grinned obnoxiously and popped his stolen bacon into his mouth. Ha! not stealthy, she didn't even notice it was gone! Taylor was stealth in essence.

"Great idea Hannah, maybe we could get the whole table involved." Taylor said and then half stood up from his seat, looking down at a few of the Hufflepuffs farther down, "OI, WE'RE HAVING A SNOW ORGY LATER. WANT IN?"

Derek gave Hannah a privately amused look. Yeah, he loved his girlfriend. A lot.

He wasn't even going to start guessing about what snow angels could be code for and then Taylor was doing it for him. Derek closed his eyes in the way one does when trying to remain dignified and not be amused but then there was the sound of,

"OI, WE'RE HAVING A SNOW ORGY LATER. WANT IN?"

and Derek leaned his face into his hand as he started laughing. "Merlin, Taylor."

Hannah shrugged. She hadn't really thought that much about what it could be a euphemism for, but when Taylor said SNOW ORGY? Yeah, that brought out some giggling.

"We're inviting the Hufflepuffs to the snow orgy? Well I'm sure it will be a raucous good time, then." She glanced down at a few scandalized younger years. Poor kids.

Then, the owls showed up. Oh wonderful. Hannah hadn't forgotten the previous day's event. Howlers were awful... completely awful. "Oh Merlin, I hope that my mother got all of her rage out yesterday. If the howlers are going to become a regular thing? I might have to start eating breakfast in my room."

If Anora could do a verbal version of the '...', she would've taken full advantage of it at this point in her life. However, she started giggling with Hannah. She followed her gaze to the horrified looking younger years and added, "Don't worry kids, it'll be a safe snow orgy," she nodded satisfactorily, shaking her head with amusement.

She didn't even bother glancing up at the owls coming into the Hall. If Ramses had post for her? She'd be climbing up the endless flights of stairs to the Owlery to get it herself. She smirked as an idea occured to her. "Hmm, I wonder if I've ever gotten a Howler? I guess I wouldn't know, on account of if Ramses had ever brought one back from somewhere, it would've exploded or yelled at him," her friends were perfectly aware of Ramses The Stubborn Git. Secretly, Anora really did love her owl, but she wished he'd do his JOB once in awhile and bring her some bloody post.

Something thunked against the table near a platter of pancakes but was paid very little mind on account of it's looking like nothing more than a copy of the Prophet. Pouncing on the paper for a read over Saturday morning breakfast was not the sort of thing any self respecting student did. Weekends were sacred things, after all, and anything of note that happened during such days could wait for word of mouth or herald itself with a thunderclap. Derek was listening to the talk of owls and howlers as he reached across the table for more toast when a disinterested glance at the paper in question picked up sevearal key phrases that caused him to freeze.

...MURDER SUSPECT FOUND DEAD
...Shelby Bly-Masterson...explosion at her residence.

Derek's heart started pounding so badly it seemed like everyone ought to hear it and without thinking he grabbed the paper instead of food and turned it so he could read properly. It couldn't possibly- Derek's face went white and he dropped the teacup he'd been holding, totally oblivious to the splash ( ... )

Taylor sat back down with a satisfied grin at the reactions, "Yes, Hannah. Puffs are quite savvy with orgies. And they aren't always snow orgies," Taylor said with a very important look, as if this were some sort of important fact everyone ought to know ( ... )

Taylor's discussion of Hufflepuff orgies had Hannah giggling all over again. "That is the most disturbing thing I have heard in a long time, Taylor." After all, certain people were Hufflepuffs. And that made it awkward and weird. Anyways...

She breathed a sigh of relief as she realized that Nox was not back for round two. One round had been enough for Hannah. Yes things were going quite well. Hannah started to open one letter that had come from her father. Which was, as always a nice Friday surprise.

The clattering of Derek's teacup made Hannah jump and a small gasp may have escaped her lips. She was about to make a sly comment on his coordination skills or lack thereof when she saw the expression on his face. One look at him made her stomach drop. Something was wrong... very wrong. She glanced at the article in question. The death of... Shelby. A strange pit of dread formed in her stomach as she kept reading. Her husband and their three kids ( ... )

Anora was in the middle of agreeing with Taylor's brilliant plan to exact revenge on her owl and suggesting that they should hide out and wait for it to explode at him for their own amusement when..

"Holy.." she couldn't finish her sentence, as she was once again finding herself at a loss for words. This..this was insane. The entire family? That was just..wow. The entire family. It was inconceivable. She had no idea how to react. She looked from Taylor to Hannah to Derek, and waited for Derek to say something.

Derek couldn't move. He couldn't think. In truth he barely noticed that Taylor had taken the paper, he simply continued to stare at where it had been, the words burned into his brain even as he stared at a bit of orange rind someone had discarded on the table between platters of sweet rolls and pancakes.

Aunt Shelby was dead. Uncle Randal...the kids. Merlin, Eric had just had a birthday. Derek felt weak and sick all at once. He'd never been exactly close to aunt Shelby, not since his cousins had been born and she'd started avoiding the family in ernest but this... Derek had been annoyed with her for making holidays miserable, forcing the family to pretend they didn't use magic, but he'd never wanted her gone.

People were saying things but Derek couldn't quite make his brain register them. His name was said somewhere. Taylor's voice? Derek's breathing was shaky but he tried to make a response, "I- I should..." He started to get up but wasn't sure where exactly it was that he should be going. "I don't-"

Oh, Merlin.

"Maybe... maybe you should go back to the dorm rooms..." Taylor said and rose with Derek. He looked over at Hannah, "We'll all bring you back..." Taylor said. At least then he could make sure no one bothered him on the way. Hopefully Hannah would be able to comfort him more than Taylor really could once they got him there.

But other than that, he wasn't sure what else to do for him. What do you do when someone in your family dies? You can't do anything... you feel helpless. He wasn't exactly sure how close Derek had been to his aunt, but obviously that didn't matter, since it was still effecting him in a big way.

"Yeah, we can get you back to your room," Taylor nodded to Anora and Hannah. He figured that at least, Derek needed to be somewhere where half the school wasn't around to see him grieve.
