[The work bench has Soffio flowers at each stool, and a huge assortment of glass and plastic spray bottles strewn across the surface. Professor Flave is at her desk playing with Phineas, her garden snake.]

Ramsey wandered into Herbology from breakfast in the Great Hall and sat down at a work bench without glancing up at the front of the class. He had the Charms book he'd checked out from the library the week before with him, and was reading up on speed charms with dogged persistence. He barely even noticed as Garlick peeked out of the hood of his robes, crawled over his shoulder, and plopped down on the workbench, quickly scurrying over to the Plant of the Week with interest. The air around the flower turned a muddy greenish-brown as the rat drew close to it.

Of course she'd already read the reading (most likely in charms) and examined each of the bottles with curiousity. She caught movement out of the corner of her eye and watched Ramsey's...pet move to the flower.

"He needs a bath." She glanced up at the boy with mild interest.

"Huh?" Ramsey asked, glancing up from his book. His eyes flicked to Garlick and he shook his head. "No he doesn't, he just fell into the pumpkin juice at breakfast is all," he said. "Soffio's don't like a lot of different food smells."

"He fell into the pumpkin juice?" Addie stared at him with disdain. "Are you serious?" At that moment she couldn't be happier that she wasn't in Slytherin (well she was pretty happy about that all the time anyways).

"Are you trying to teach me?" She stared at him now with an added look of anger. "I know how Soffio's react. Maybe you should go back to a kitchen somewhere, help the houseelves or something."

...girls. Ramsey didn't pretend to understand girls his own age - his younger sisters, they made sense. But girls like Addie? Nutcases, all of them.

"Yes, he fell in. No, I'm not trying to teach you, I just think it's stupid that they're sensitive to pretty much any strong scent, that's all," he said with a shrug. "Would make sense if they didn't like the smell of something burning, but complaining about perfectly fine food? Pretty stupid."

"That's disgusting." She looked at him and then his pet and rolled her eyes as she took one of the unlabeled bottles and opened it near the flower.

The air around it started to turn orange and she noted the bottle number and the effects in her journal. She then smelled it herself before closing the bottle and setting it aside. She'd barely payed any notice to what Ramsey had said after that but took offense that he was calling the plants stupid. "They are sensitive to ANY scent. It's not their fault that your stupid rat is putrid green. He obviously needs a bath. If it had just been the pumpkin juice it would have turned yellow."

"He's not putrid green. He's muddy brown. There's a difference," Ramsey argued, grabbing a bottle and sniffing the contents. Huh. Cardamom. Shrugging, he sprayed the flower and watched as air turned a reddish-violet around the Soffio. He pulled out a sheet of parchment and scribbled down the scent and reactions.

"As for why it wasn't yellow, that's because after he fell in the pumpkin juice, some seventh year freaked and knocked the pitcher over, so he ended up in the kippers for a little bit."

Addie nearly gagged right there. "I would have killed him. He is a rodent after all." She glared at him and moved onto the next bottle trying to ignore the fact that he'd just discovered one. He could be wrong...or something.

She opened another bottle and rested it next to the flowers while they changed to the new scent.

"Don't you make food or something? Isn't having a rat unhygeinic?"

Grabbing another bottle, Ramsey took off the top and sniffed it before recapping it and spritzing the plant after scrawling "horseradish" on his parchment. The Soffio's aura turned a sickly chartreuse, and Garlick poked at the flower, a little curious.

"Rats are very hygienic," Ramsey shot back. "You're just thinking of sewer rats, that's all. Pet rats are different."

Addie glared at him and wrote down the affects of the bottle she'd had open, which also apparently had been the horseradish.. she hated to think or anyone else to think that she was copying off him because she wasn't she was just as smart (if not smarter then he was.

This was proving aggravating. "Still a rat. how different could he be."

Addie moved onto the next bottle and tried to finish it before Ramsey could, just to prove to herself that she wasn't copying off him.

"Depends on where they live, and whether the person taking care of them cleans them regularly. I mean, think of homeless people - they're just as human as you, but they usually smell a lot worse," Ramsey said, catching up another bottle and twisting off the top. Phew, that reeked - he didn't even need to spray it, his Soffio was already turning a brilliant, eye-watering bluish-green. He quickly re-capped the bottle, then inscribed "juniper" on his parchment, pressing hard so he could actually see what he was writing through watering eyes.

"And if you're going to say that I'm not taking care of him because I didn't bathe him after breakfast, just so you know that's not the case - I just didn't have enough time before class started."

Honestly? Addie never thought of homeless people. She grew up an a pureblood area where every house was some sort of ancient castle (or made to look like one). She tried to avoid whatever his plant was doing and focus on her own work and be rid of the boy..but he kept defending his stupid rat.

"Maybe you can take care of him well enough to keep him. They're not even allowed to be pets at Hogwarts anyways.." She focused on her own and it turned the same bluish green. She smelled the scent herself and cringed...writing down 'gin' in her notes.

"There are so many people with pets they aren't supposed to have that I don't think it really matters," Ramsey said, rolling his eyes before darting them up to the front of the class where Flave was playing with her snake.

While he was talking, Garlick scampered over to another bottle, sat up on his hind legs, and took off the top. Taking the open bottle, Ramsey sniffed, then frowned. Familiar, but... where had he smelled it before? He shrugged - maybe the aura color would give him a clue. Screwing the top back on, he misted the flower and watched as the aura turned a cool, smoky blue. Well, that was no help.

Sighing, he passed the bottle to Addie. "Hey, you got any clue?" She was a snob and he wasn't overly fond of her, but she did decent in Herbology, so who knew.

Addie rolled her eyes and turned her body away from him. Really this was why she didn't deal with boys her own age, so immature.

She was working on another bottle that made the flowers turn ash colored...she smelled the bottle and frowned... it was to vague to really place but...

"What?" She turned to the boy, slightly annoyed and looked at the plant. So he was asking for her help? Hmmm...well he was asking her for help who was she to not show off her superiority.

Addie looked at the plant, saw the bluish haze and sighed. "What's it smell like?"

"I don't know, moist? You smell. I'll try and help you with yours if you try and help me with mine," Ramsey said, offering the bottle again as he reached for the one she was working with.
