My sympathies. We have given up on the concept of bath mats and throw rugs because our male cat tends to use them instead of his box whenever he gets in a snit. (Or is bored, I dunno.) Good thing all our floors are wood or tile.
Shadow used to pee on bathmats fairly often. I think some of that was just marking. But, you might want to have the vet check for any medical problems that might be making elimination uncomfortable--- one time when one of the cats was having especially a lot of issues with "thinking outside the box," I heard from somewhere that sometimes a cat will start to avoid the box just from classical conditioning. And the one time I actually caught the cat doing it, he made a really unhappy noise just before he pooped on the rug, which seemed to be another clue. That was a few years ago, and I don't remember the details, but I remember we took him to the vet and then tried a few different things and eventually the situation improved. I don't even remember for sure which cat that was, either Quick or Shadow.

(It seems to me my journal is focusing a lot on cat mess. Should I keep my frustrations to myself, do you think?)
