Monday, April 3rd - Late Afternoon on the Lift (somewhere between floors)lenore_greyMarch 12 2007, 10:06:42 UTC
Lenore was only just now coming into the office and she didn't intend to stay long. She'd spent all weekend down in Mysteries working on her current project. Even if she'd been able to stay away for any length of time on a normal weekend, Lenore was particularly loathe to abandon things during something as potentially chaotic as April Fool's Day and things had been running well. If she'd been less talkative and more of a workaholic than usual lately she didn't care to question it. It was, however, time for a bit of a break. She'd been quite producitve but eventually one had to sleep and home was a preferable place in which to do so. A few hours caught here and there in her office didn't quite do it.
There was just one thing Lenore had to check back in on before returning home and possibly eating a real meal; one idea that had popped into her head after a good deal of sleep and needed to be tested or at least fleshed out on parchment before she could go back to her flat and attempt real relaxation.

Calling it an early day on Monday was hardly the behavior to have for being awarded top obliviator but it was just the kind of thing that Ed was currently considering. So much so that he already pushed the button for the lift and was just going to decide when he got in.
So when the lift came to rest on his floor and the door opened to reveal Lenore he just smiled and stepped inside. "So..where to?"

Lenore smiled when she noticed Ed but she was forced to cover a yawn before she could manage a reply. "Sorry," she excused. "I'm...um, heading down. I'm only staying half an hour, I swear."
Why she felt the need to defend this to Ed- who she hadn't hardly spoken to in a week at least- Lenore didn't know. Possibly she thought he was the sort of person who would have told her to go home right now if he had any idea how many hours she'd put in, or maybe it was just that she knew it was silly to be back and needed to invent someone to tell her to leave in the absence of any such logical figure who watched enough to lecture her.

Ed couldn't help but laugh. "Looks like you're headed to get some coffee with me." He pushed the button to go to level 8 and looked at her. "If you hadn't yawned I still would have said you look tired. When's the last time you went home?"
Sometimes he thought she was too much like the old man and neglected everything else for the sake of the job. And how the Ministry was now and days? He didn't care for putting to much time in it.

An almost contented sound escaped her lips and Lenore let herself lean against the back wall of the lift. Coffee was always good. Had she had any since waking? Well, she had gotten in her first solid sleep in a few days and had more or less come straight here... Probably not. Forgetting coffee, she really was tired.
"I was home," she defended. "Since," Lenore stopped a moment to consider it, "last night? This morning? No, no, it was definitely last night," she remembered. "Late, but definitely last night. I just slept all morning is all. I'm only coming in for a bit and then I'm taking a break."
If she told herself that enough times, surely she'd be able to stick to it. Having coffee with Ed would be a nice distraction though. She really had been holed up down there too long. Something told her she was rambling as well- no doubt a by product of waning social contacts and insufficient rest.

He laughed again at her rambling and held the door open for her as they walked toward the cafeteria. "Sure sure sure.." He waved it off dismissively because they've had these small arguments a few too many times.
"Coffee and food. Doctor's orders." He gave her another wink and started on choosing her breakfast for her. "So.. you were home. Slept all morning...and just now coming in?"

Lenore tried to fix him with a glare but Ed did look to be fixing her a plate and it was hard to argue with a man who was taking care of you. "Slept most of the morning and some of the afternoon," she clarified. "And don't give me that look, I was up most of the weekend- and here, might I add. I'm allowed a day off."

"Well you shouldn't have been here all weekend." He said pointedly back to her and shot her a quick glare as he finished paying and moved towards one of the tables.
"You're young and single. There should be more to life than work." Ed couldn't help but be in parent mode around Lenore right now. He sighed and ate some of the grapes that he had put in front of her. "Nothing is so important that you have to work through the weekend."
Re: Monday, April 3rd - Cafeteria (level 8)lenore_greyMarch 13 2007, 01:38:03 UTC
"Spoken like a man who doesn't enjoy his job," Lenore critiqued before starting in on the food gratefully. "You can't just stop in the middle," she explained. What it was she couldn't stop was, of course, something Lenore couldn't go into but the bottom line was when things were going well you didn't just walk out for the day because the clock suggested it. What kind of work would ever get done in that sort of atmosphere? It was also the reason she generally took frequent visits outside of the office when the mood struck her. Productivity couldn't be forced.
"You're just jealous that you don't make your own hours," Lenore teased.

"Oh but I do." He gave her a small wink and stole some more fruit. "I just am older and wiser than you. That's all."
He almost laughed a bit but held it behind his broad smile. "Giving up your life for your job is something I got tired of." Okay, partial lie: he still wished he was an auror and if he were he'd probably be a bit like the old man too.

Lenore cocked her head to give him a look over her coffee, "I'd hardly call it giving up. I take time off," she insisted. "Like today." Half an hour hardly counted as coming in.
She reached for the bagel on her plate and gestured toward Ed with a butter knife, "I know what this is. You're just upset that I haven't interrupted the monotony of your days lately. Miss me, don't you?" Lenore said with and expression full of mock sympathy.
Re: Monday, April 3rd - Cafeteria (level 8)ed_agateMarch 13 2007, 03:44:54 UTC
Ed couldn't help but laugh now, the way she was teasing him. "Yep. Caught me, I'm so dreadfully bored without you coming and brightening up my day."
He gave her a lopsided smile and stole a sip of her coffee. "If you take time off you shouldn't be here at all. They must love you down there, you probably do the work of 5 people."
Re: Monday, April 3rd - Cafeteria (level 8)lenore_greyMarch 14 2007, 22:35:16 UTC
Lenore smirked when Ed admitted it and the expression turned into a grin when he helped himself to the coffee. The man was a tease; whether he intended it or not, it was still true. Sexual tension aside though, Lenore was happy to have a friend to talk to. She had been locked away a bit too long this time.
"They do love me," she agreed. "But I don't know about the 5 people business. I think most of us are rather eccentrically chained to our desks." Her fellow Unspeakables tended to get just as excited as her when it came to breakthroughs and new developments; it was sort of rolled up in the job description.
Unable to quite hide a smile, Lenore reclaimed the coffee mug and took a sip. "How goes the memory wiping business?"
Re: Monday, April 3rd - Cafeteria (level 8)ed_agateMarch 14 2007, 22:45:02 UTC
"Is that what I do? Thanks for reminding me." He winked at her and stretched his arms in a mock yawn. "Mostly boring. Sometimes interesting. But when it gets interesting the hit wizards tend to get all excited and try to take over. Which usually means more Gabe Salix visits which I tend to loathe."
He kept his mouth shut on any further feeling he had toward that boy but certainly didn't hide it from his face. "So yeah.. I was about to skiv actually. Head out early and see the world. Never been one for desks."
Re: Monday, April 3rd - Cafeteria (level 8)lenore_greyMarch 15 2007, 00:00:44 UTC
"Supervision does have it's downsides," she observed, popping the last of her bagel into her mouth. The distinct lack of Gabriel Salixes breathing down her neck was a definite upside to classified work. Occasionally the Minister would suggest that he wanted an update of this or that, or some full of herself official would try to get a peak in, but by and large the ninth level was left to its own control. No doubt, that was another reason Lenore stayed safely in it during weeks like they'd been having.
"The world? You mean cloudy days and fogbanks outside the walls of the Ministry?" Lenore leaned back with her coffee and picked up a grape. "Lies. Besides, something tells me you see more of it with your field work than I do."
Re: Monday, April 3rd - Cafeteria (level 8)ed_agateMarch 15 2007, 04:25:56 UTC
"Yep. That'd be the one." He gave her a smile and leaned back in his chair again. "And I probably do, but not nearly enough for me. If I had my way there would never be a desk involved. ever."
He sat back upright and stole another sip of her coffee. "And some good surf. What I wouldn't do for good surf.." He closed his eyes, remembering the waves for a moment and then reopened them.
"Hmmm... well...seems like I've fed you. My work for the day is done." Yet he made no move of leaving.

She would be good, honest.
