Tuesday, May 9th - Afternoon in the Cafeteria lenore_grey May 31 2007, 00:46:54 UTC
Lenore was taking a much needed break from the ninth level and was currently kicked back in a corner of the cafeteria, reclining in her chair with her legs propped up and crossed on the seat of another as she read the Quibbler. She was running into walls again on her project in Mysteries and she needed to clear her head, find inspiration in an unexpected place, something. More often than not, Lenore thought better when she allowed herself to roam the building. Social calls though they were, her random visits to Ed and Mac during the week served a purpose. Tricking her brain into relaxing and coming up with the solution on it's own was a well practiced strategy.

Or then again, maybe it was just that when a person practically lived at work for all self imposed late nights and crazy hours, they were allowed to be eccentric and decide to socialize during normal business hours. She'd needed more coffee too.

Geoffrey was more than ready for a break, having spent his morning running all over the Ministry, desperately trying to get the idiot bureaucrats to give him back his passport. The entire thing was absolutely crazy, considering that for once he'd done absolutely nothing wrong. Well. Certainly he'd not had anything to do with the stuff they were trying to pin on him. He was much better than that.

Clinging to his coffee cup like the lifeline that it was, Geoffrey headed for a corner, hoping to escape the hustle and bustle. Drawing near, he was more than a little please to spot a familiar face.

"H'lo, lovely," he greeted Lenore. "What're you doing way back here?"

Lenore looked up and her expression brightened when she saw Geoffrey walking up. Move from her comfortable spot she didn't, however. There were other chairs for him to sit in if he was really going to join her and Geoffrey was about the last person she expected to take offense at her remaining relaxed. "I," she said matter of factly, "am reading my daily dose of fabricated truth. You know the other week they informed me I know how to raise the dead? I'm curious as to what else I'm doing with my days that I can't tell people about," she said, looking back to the page as though it were really that interesting.

"Really I should be the one asking you why you're here," Lenore added distractedly. It was a valid point and another moment's thought she lowered the Quibbler and gave young Chandler a scrutinizing look. "You haven't been arrested finally, have you?"

Snagging a chair, Geoffrey drew it closer and sat down beside the Unspeakable. "Reading the Quibbler for fabricated truth? You should try the Prophet, it's just as good - last week they ran some absolute shite about how my cousin offed Raleigh's sister and her family," he grumbled. "If you're able to raise the dead, you might try it on them. It'd clear up the rumours that seem to be running rampant at the moment and maybe help clear up the headache I've had since last Wednesday."

Geoffrey had the decency to look offended at her suggestion that he'd been arrested. "Moi? Arrested? If I'd been arrested, d'you think our lovely lads up in Law Enforcement would let me wander around free?" He snorted and took a sip of his coffee. "Naw, they're giving me troubles with my passport. Seem to be under the impression that I've some sort of record of criminal activity, which is preposterous - catch me letting anyone record what I'm up too! Insanity."

"Couldn't even if I could," Lenore fairly singsonged. "You don't think Unspeakables go around flaunting their skills to the uneducated just for kicks do you? In fact, it's possible I'll have to kill you just for bringing it up," she said, mockingly solemn. Still, his point about the Prophet was true enough and, feeling rather tired of printed news all together, tossed the Quibbler onto the the next table and leaned an elbow onto theirs.

She smirked at his plea of near innocence. "It does tend to catch up one," Lenore teased. For a moment she paused to take a sip and hid her amusement behind her mug. "If there were strings to pull, I might pull one for you. Then again, it's possible I shouldn't be encouraging you. Probably for the best that I don't carry any weight outside of Mysteries. Another moral grey area avoided."

Yes, because you always worry about those.

"Eh, if I really wanted an Unspeakable's help I'd just ask my brother," Geoffrey said lightly. "Though, come to think of it, if he could do anything to mitigate the current family upheaval, he probably would've already done it, so I'm guessing the resurrection rumour is just that - a rumour."

"Once again, I resent the implication that I have ties to anything of a less than legal nature," he sniffed. "Indeed, I am the very picture of a model citizen. I can't help it if the bureaucrats are a bunch of knuckleheads who think otherwise."

"Mm. Or maybe you already know too much and your coffee is slowly poisoning you as we speak."

Sometimes, Lenore didn't know where the things that came out of her mouth came from. Apparently she was a spy now. Or maybe a secret agent. It was kind of hilarious actually because she was the least believable person to threaten anyone with pain of death. Defensive spells and hexing had never been her stong point- not that she advertised it. Thus the fictional poison, she supposed.

"I'm sure they have it completely wrong and it'll be cleared up in no time then," she teased before growing more serious. "Can't say I'm sorry to see you though, circumstances aside. It's been rather dull around here lately." If by dull, of course, she meant too much going on that no one really wanted to talk about. Hard to keep the conversation light these days and Lenore really wasn't in the mood for doom and gloom. "I'm sure your perfectly legal and sanctioned activities have been interesting, anyway."

"Come now, no need to try and make me feel special," Geoffrey said with a smile. "We both know that the coffee here does that to everyone indiscriminately."

He leaned in, setting his cup on the table and taking her hand. "Hey, don't look so gloomy. You act like that and I might just have to forgo my battle against the bureaucracy in favour of kidnapping you for the day in order to cheer you up. And something tells me that absconding with a Ministry official in the middle of the work day will not help me in my efforts to renew my passport."

"We both know that the coffee here does that to everyone indiscriminately."

Lenore laughed. "Oh, is that how they're getting rid of me then? I have to admit, it's a good plan."

Talk of being kidnaped made her smile again. It was rather impossible to be in a bad mood with Geoffrey around and there was a distinct lack of spontaneous men around the Ministry. Shame that. "Probably not," she agreed. "I am intrigued though. Do you have plans for your day once you're done being exhonerated?"

"It's rather cunning, isn't it? I suppose it is part of their devilishly clever plan to make us drink only tea. Unfortunately, I cannot be swayed from my coffee-loving ways," Geoffrey said with a sigh.

"Honestly, I don't have any real plans, particularly since I should probably stick around for a bit to help support my sister as she tries to work out family politics," he explained with a shrug. "Though nothing'll happen on that front today, I think. So... I hereby dedicate the rest of my day to your lovely self." With a flourish, he executed a little bow in Lenore's direction, continuing to remain seated. "If you're not adverse to kidnapping, of course."

"Me? Adverse to kidnapping?" She gave him a coy look. For a moment she looked around the room and sighed. "You'd probably be doing me a favor. Nothing's getting done here today." It seemed clear that her mind was not inclined to re-engage now that she'd taken a break.

Lenore finally set down her coffee and leaned into the table with her elbows. "Are there ties involved? Locked doors? Or are we just going to run around free of responsibility and get up to trouble?" she asked intently. "I could go either way."

Ties? Locked doors? Oh, yes, this was why he liked Lenore - she was just his kind of woman. "We could do all three," he proposed, raising an eyebrow. "I'm rather intrigued by your suggestion of ties, though. Would these be neckties, or rope-ties, or leather-ties...?"

"Well, if you want me to plan my own kidnapping out for you, I suppose I could." Due to no small amount of practice- never mind lack of self consciousness- Lenore managed to keep a perfectly straight face in the midst of their conversation. Admittedly, a lot of the time she enjoyed catching people unaware. Geoffrey was fun because he never missed a beat. "I'm rather curious to know which was your first inclination," she baited, letting a small smile slip through.

"Oh, well. I'm a rather simple man, so I was just planning to lull you into having a false sense of security and then lure you away with promises of sex and excellent food," Geoffrey said. "But if you're willing to be tied up, that sounds like fun too."

"False sense of security?" she repeated teasingly. "That would seem to suggest I had something to worry about in the first place, which you'll forgive me for not believing. Unless Unspeakables are suddenly a hot buy on the black market? You're not selling me to slavers are you?" she asked seriously, adding with a touch of mock sympathy, "They'll be so disappointed when I apparate away."

Lenore grinned and leaned back in her chair. "I consent only on the premise sex is somehow involved. Being tied up just to be tied hardly seems worth it."

"I think people are more interested in picking the brains of Unspeakables than the rest of them. Not to worry, thought - I wouldn't even try to sell you, there's no way I'd get any sort of fair price," he said lightly, grinning at her. "Though it might be fun to see how many times I could sell you, if you kept Disapparating. Unfortunately, I think that also falls under Muggle taunting, which means we're really not supposed to do it."

"And if I tie you up, I promise that it'll only be for sexual purposes. On my honor." Geoffrey grinned, finishing off the last of his coffee. "Well? Wanna try it?"
