Tuesday, May 2 - Late morning in the Liftlenore_greyMay 18 2007, 01:30:28 UTC
Merlin.
Lenore closed her eyes and tried to pretend she'd gotten more sleep last night. This morning. Whatever it was. She was personally convinced that there was very little that caffeine wouldn't cure, but on occasion her body chose to argue with the theory. Annoying that.
Sighing, she leaned against the back of the lift and took long drink of her coffee. The bright side to coming in late was that things weren't quite so crowded in here. Lenore wasn't sure she was up for listening to several conversations at once in such a confined space. Her head was not happy with her as it was.

Jack was too tired to even bother calling out "hold the lift" as the doors began to clatter shut. Instead he just sort of slid across the marble floor, turning at the last moment and sidestepping through the gap in the doors just in time.
He offered a polite nod to the lift's other occupant as he leaned against another of the walls. He hadn't the vaguest idea who she was, but her coffee smelled amazing. He was heading to the cafeteria to get himself a nice mug of that himself, orelse there was no way he'd make it through a daytime full of stamping seals onto papers and playing carrier pigeon between offices.

Lenore gave the young man a tired, reflexive smile as he slid in. He stayed quiet, which was nice. All too soon she'd be down in the office and walking through that damned room full of ticking clocks. She was pretty well used to the noise by now and most days she rather liked it. Being tired, however, didn't do much for her willingness to tolerate methodical background noise of the sort that either woke you up or put you back to sleep.
After a few moments silence as the lift started to descend she spoke up, nodding as though it needed to be indicated who she was talking to, "Late start for more than just me then?"
Re: Tuesday, May 2 - Late morning in the Liftjack_martinMay 20 2007, 04:39:17 UTC
The question surprised him, because usually people at work (other than Ed Agate... odd man) didn't really, you know, talk to him, unless they were giving him orders. Still, it would be rude not to answer.
Thinking about it made Jack grin a bit sheepishly. He absently rubbed the back of his neck and nodded. "Yeah well, you know what they say, early to bed, early to rise... makes sense that the opposite's true as well." I had been a late night, which perhaps it shouldn't have been, being a monday, and all... but he'd had someonething to keep him occupied.

The look didn't pass unnoticed by Lenore and she smirked. If she were a good person, she would probably let it go. Maybe she would. She hardly knew the bloke by sight so teasing him about what he'd been up to was probably over the line. Ah, well.
"Yeah well, you know what they say, early to bed, early to rise... makes sense that the opposite's true as well."
"It does follow, unfortunately," she agreed.
After a moment, she gave over to the smile still quirking at her lips. She did, however, try to keep her tone innocent as though they could be talking about staying up to read. "Was it worth it?"

Jack eyed her a little suspiciously, but he couldn't hide his smile. Martins were not particularly good at keeping their emotions off their faces. None of the boys had inherited that talent from their mother.
He sort of half rolled his eyes and looked, resolutely, at the buttons of the lift, as if he wasn't going to dignify that question with an answer. After all, for all she knew, he could have been up late working on papers or something... Ha, right, like anyone would believe that. Still staring at the buttons - the number 3, in particular, was very nice - he smirked and simply said, "yup."

Lenore smiled. "Well," she said as though that was all there was to it (which it was), "There you are then." So long as the night was worth it, Lenore fully endorsed staying up. Sleeping in afterward was ideal but sometimes you had to take what you could get.
"Mine wasn't really," she added randomly, possibly because it was early (for them) and she was tired but more likely because it was Lenore. Talking would wake her up. "Then again, I was working so..." She trailed off with a bored shrug.

"Work is overrated," Jack said simply, smiling at her with an odd fondness for someone he'd just met. Then again it was morning, and he was tired, and she smelled like coffee and was certainly easy on the eyes, so he couldn't help himself. "At least mine is, maybe what you do is a little more worthwhile." He took a step towards her and held out his hand. "I'm Jack, by the way. I work in the improper use of magic office."
Re: Tuesday, May 2 - Late morning in the Liftlenore_greyMay 23 2007, 02:35:26 UTC
The corner of Lenore's mouth quirked, for many reasons. Shifting her coffee to free a hand, she pushed off of the wall of the lift and shook the offered hand. "Lenore. Grey," she added, smiling more fully. "And I dare say my work is more interesting." If Lenore was good at anything it was teasing and her eyes lit with amusement.
"Nothing personal," she said honestly, "I'm not exactly without bias." Leaning back against her wall she nodded, "Department of Mysteries." This was far better company than she'd expected for a late morning. Maybe she should ride the lift at random times every day.
Re: Tuesday, May 2 - Late morning in the Liftjack_martinMay 24 2007, 04:19:32 UTC
So she was an unspeakable. Jack had never actually met anyone from that department, or else had and had no clue that they were. He grinned impishly, one eyebrow quirked. "Oh ho! Mystery woman now are we? Those are some of the best kind. And don't worry," he continued without any pause "I know my job's the dumps, thats what I get for being a bad boy in school."
Re: Tuesday, May 2 - Late morning in the Liftlenore_greyMay 26 2007, 05:51:33 UTC
"Mmm," Lenore raised an eyebrow. "And unrepentant. Even better." Who didn't have a weakness for the bad ones, really. Shame his age put Jack here in the cuteboy (but inaccessible) category. It was endearing though.
Lenore took a drink of her coffee as the voice of the lift announced they were passing level 6. "We all have to start somewhere," she shrugged. It wasn't as though they'd let her jump straight into Mysteries from school, after all. No, Lenore had pulled a few thankless years working her way up from the bottom. It was worth it though- well worth it.

"Start and probably end in my case." Jack said, still with a good natured smile plastered on his face. "You see, I have an uncanny gift for stamping documents and sealing envelopes, and I've got the youngest legs in the office so I've got a nice long career ahead of me running papers back and forth, as long as I don't injure myself in some tragic accident, because then they'll have no use for me whatsoever."
Re: Tuesday, May 2 - Late morning in the Liftlenore_greyMay 27 2007, 04:39:46 UTC
Lenore nodded over the mug she was now cradling affectionately. Oh, coffee. You are wonderful.
"It's prestigious work," she said seriously. "And it would ruin the look if you held down a serious job. No fun in that." Lenore smiled across the lift at him.
Re: Tuesday, May 2 - Late morning in the Liftjack_martinMay 27 2007, 05:03:39 UTC
"Ah, but you see, if I had a serious and or impressive job, I'd be able to meet women a lot easier." He smiled, but it wasn't a smug, sleazy smile. There was a pause as he looked every ounce sincere, as if the words that had just come out of his mouth were true and meaningful and like maybe he was looking for his soulmate.
It didn't last long. He laughed, rolling his eyes slightly and shaking his head, his still damp curls bouncing slightly. "Who am I kidding, as if I need any help meeting women."
