A good drink always ended a long day properly, in Nigel's mind. Mondays were not often especially long, but explaining the prospect of working together with older students to the first and second years had proven rather more of a challenge than he had expected. They were good kids, though, and they would all make excellent assets to the teams they joined. He just hoped the teams formed. That process, though, would have to wait for Tuesday, after the sixth and seventh year students had class.

Inside the Hog's Head, he made his way to the bar and ordered a dark beer, seating himself tentatively on the stool. He hated to take up a table by himself in case a bigger group needed them, but stools really disagreed with his leg. If only he could find someone to sit with...and then a familiar laugh echoed loudly across the room. Arthur, in the Hog's Head? Well, he must be meeting someone - Nigel glanced around the room twice before finally locating the Head Auror with his son seated in the corner. Taking his drink, he made his way over.

"Seeing both of you grinning like hyenas on holiday means you must be talking about Beccy," Nigel said. Sometimes he wished that he had children of his own - they seemed to be a real ray of happiness in the lives of his friends, no matter how dire the situation. And Beccy was, as far as Nigel knew, about the only thing that could really make Arthur smile anymore. "Mind if I join you?"

Not bothering to hide his grin, he looked up at Nigel and nodded. Beccy was, definitely, his only ray of sunshine these days and he was far too proud of her to keep that under wraps. She was a brilliant daughter and he wasn't afraid to let everyone know it - especially not when he had a few drinks in him.

"Evening," he greeted as he extended his leg under the table and pushed a chair out with his foot. "Have a seat," cam his warm invitation.

He knew that the conversation would, likely, turn back to business and, honestly, he wasn't looking forward to it. It seemed that their work was never done.

((Yeah. It's short. I'm tired. Deal. Also? *loves the both of you*))

Mac grinned and nodded his agreement. "That would be fantastic," he told his old friend. It was always good to see Nigel. Cal, of course, saw more of him these days, but Mac had been so busy that aside from that last Order meeting, he really hadn't gotten much time with the man.

"We were just discussing how my grandadaughter has clearly gotten none of her less flattering traits from either of us. Or possibly how she doesn't have any less flattering ones." He laughed at his own joke, obviously in a very good mood.

No, as far as Mac was concerned, talk didn't have to turn back to business. He knew it likely would, eventually, but he'd be happy to just sit here and enjoy the company just as much.

"How've you been, Nigel?" he inquired politely before taking another drink.

Nigel laughed, taking the seat Cal offered him. His leg bothered him more today than usual - he hoped that particular feeling would go away. The pain interfered with his teaching, even when he tried hard to not let it. He needed to be in top form if this plan to form the students into self defensive groups were to succeed.

"I think she will enjoy the lesson this week," he said, drinking his beer, "I've got quite the plan for all the students over these last weeks of class. I might even be able to use your help, Cal, since you're always at the school."

Yes, that would be good, having a living, breathing Auror to help teach the students how to defend themselves. Besides, it might give the two of them more of a chance to talk than they normally got. Nagging irritation at the continued passive role of the Order seemed to nag at Nigel's brain lately, especially when he tried to sleep. He needed to talk with Cal and see if he could figure out why Mac was so opposed to being more direct, at least in some cases. Without Mac, Nigel felt certain the Order would be much worse off, and he did not want to do anything that his friend and mentor did not approve of. Calmly, he pushed those thoughts to the back of his head. Irrational thoughts of a man who spends too much time around teenagers he told himself, taking another sip of beer, only to realize it was empty. Before he could catch someone's attention, though, it was full again. The bartender caught his eye and laughed, and Nigel smiled. Good bars knew their patrons.

"Me?" he said finally, answering Mac's query, "I'm not going to lie to you, Mac, I've been better. I don't sleep well, and my leg has been bothering something terrible recently. I'm not one for being superstitious, but if those old coots with their aching joints are to be believed, something's a-coming, something big, and soon. Maybe I should talk with Reginald - he might have seen something."

Cal changed from his slightly slouched position and gave their newly arrived guest a little more of his attention.

"Yes," he agreed, "I'm sure that she will enjoy it. At least, she will if she is, indeed, like me."

He'd never classified Transfiguration as his favorite class but he'd always done pretty well in it. Beccy, certainly, didn't seem to have any trouble making decent marks.

He gave the older man a nod and smile. "I'll help out any way that I can," he offered.

Once Nigel began speaking more directly to his father, he turned his drink up again and took another swallow. He'd likely stop with this one -duties and all- but he intended to enjoy it while he could.

Mac nodded his agreement. A love of Transfiguration (and a skill, too) seemed to almost run in the family. It was one thing they all three had in common.

"I'm sure she will enjoy it," he agreed, laughing a little at his son's comment. Considering they'd just been claiming the girl wasn't like either of them, it was amusing.

His laughter faded, though, as Nigel kept talking, speaking of big things coming. Mac was quite inclined to agree, unfortunately. "Something big and something probably not good," he agreed grimly, falling silent again as he took another pull at his drink.
