The past few days have been insanely busy and/or tiresome, but most has been very much worthwhile.
I attended Of Montreal by myself on the 3rd, and it would have been a blast if it hadn't been an all-ages show. There's just something about feeling like I'm at the ice cream social in drag that bothers me. The band was definitely on top of their game and having fun. Nick Spencer was presenting the event while also announcing the new location for our city's coveted alchemize venue. The inaugural Desdemona Festival this summer ran into some financial trouble, so he was asking people to donate what they could to rescue the venture. Some people agreed with it; others obviously had different opinions. But heck--no one else attempted to make such an event happen in our city. Here's to hoping there's another one next year.
The following Saturday (the 6th) was a long day at work, but I read about the art museum being open for 25 straight hours to celebreate their 125th anniversary. I knew exactly what I was going to do that night. So after a few phone calls to people, I got in touch with my friend Amber. We had an incredible time at the museum -- wandering through the galleries at insane hours of the night, running into friends and fun strangers, seeing Venus Hum playing in the Great Hall upon our entrance...so much fun. We spend a couple hours hanging out with friends Jill, her friend, Gian, and Dan in a room that had the greatest chair in the world. It was a double chair that had the seats facing each other and on opposite sides, with one armrest connecting the two at the middle. It was the fascination for our last two hours in the museum. Plenty of pictures were taken; several great laughs were had. We finally called it a night at around 6am. There's no way we'll ever be able to say we stayed at the art museum all night again, so we smart and took full advantage of the event.
The following week mostly consisted of feeling mediocre and nauseous as Kate broke up with me for partially-specified reasons. Friends have been on my side like crazy, so there's been no complaining there. She has completely shut me out of her life for the time being. I've been on the fence about a few things lately, but I've decided to just let it go and allow her to do whatever makes her happy. If, in the end, she can enjoy life without me so suddenly, then I guess it was nothing special. She said it's a sensitive time for her right now, and any sense of urgency or immediacy on my part will further distance her from me. There's really nothing I can do about anything, and I've come to terms with that. I'll send her off like a dove into the sky. If she ever decides to come back, I'll be more reluctant than ever about letting her perch in my hands. It's the most idiotic metaphor I could imagine. Ignoring what I just typed...there's really nothing that can be done or said about it. It's pretty screwed up how the whole situation panned out in just a few days. Unbelievable.
At the end of the week (the 11th), Ali, Zach, and I went down to Nashville for Forget Cassettes CD release show. The car ride down there was probably the quickest I've ever driven. I'm sure it was a little quicker for them though...with their...alcohol and beer in cleverly diguising juice drink bottles. Talk about feeling like the cab driver! We got into town early enough to enjoy some of our time, but the downpour throughout the day put a damper on what we could do. So we sat in on their soundcheck for an hour or so before getting delicious food at Cafe Coco. Ali and Jay from Apollo Up! have been an item since the band's show in Cincy in early July. They spent some time together before the show, while Zach and I went to Green Hills Mall to wander. The show that night turned out to be the most chilling of their sets with the current lineup. It was also very exciting to see The Whole Fantastic World open for them. It was their first show in almost a year, since my ex Katy and I saw them to a slim crowd of 9 people in Louisville. (What a poorly organised show by the venue that was, I should note.) I saw Daniel and Craig up at Pitchfork, as I mentioned, but it was still wonderful to see them again in their former hometown. Daniel introduced me to their new drummer, telling him that I was their superfan, seeing me at their shows in more states than anyone else he knows. That made me snicker. Hehe. Those guys are welcome to stay in my home anytime. The ride home was a brutal one. I made it to Louisville with no problem, all with the help of Zach entertaining me with cracks, other late-night humor, and twenty questions. I had to give him the wheel though, as I didn't want to kill us all by falling asleep. I was out for the remainder of the ride home. Oh, and I apologized for being a cranky son of a bitch after the couple times I woke up in a frenzy. I think it was a successful trip for all of us. I just don't think we'll do the overnight return again. Damn that was rough.
I worked plenty this past week, but not nearly as much as I should have. A couple new stores had been getting ready to open, and it's the perfect opportunity to get time-and-a-half just by working at one of those future locations. Tomorrow I'll be working about 13 or 14 hours, which should be a blast. Any money to help pay for school books or rent would be great. Now I just have to jump to the occasion and just fucking do it. Today consisted of working five hours on my day off because two people called in sick. Then my mom and I had subs for lunch, and I showed her my future apartment. She'll be letting me take a few larger furniture items which is a big help. The next two weeks will consist of buying textbooks, getting the alternative loan squared away, and moving on the 1st of September...and working like I have no soul.
Lauren and I got together later in the day today.. It seems that shit has been hitting the fan for me and many of my friends lately. Fortunately that has brought us closer to each other. We hung out at my place for a couple hours before finally deciding to see Strangers With Candy at the Esquire. It was our movie pick since nothing else looked remotely interesting, but we sure were pleasantly surprised at how hilarious it really was. We laughed our butts off, losing control several times throughout the screening. When we walked out of the theatre and into the hallway, there was a giant movie poster for Little Miss Sunshine. I overheard people from our movie having the same problem with something we talked about earlier in the evening. Early Friday will be a tough decision for us -- Little Miss Sunshine or Snakes on a Plane. Haha. She works a late shift that day but hopefully whatever we decide will totally make our days. I think it will.
I'll be driving down to Nashville on the 25th for what is most likely my last out-of-town trip of the year. Venus Hum will be playing the Mercy Lounge, and just have to see them after what I witnessed at the art museum. I praised them afterwards and said I'd do my best to come down for them. They put on a tremendous performance, and I can't wait to see what magic the bring to that club. Plus, Annette's glasses are probably the most amazing I'd ever seen. Le crush. ;-) There will be a photo taken.
OH! And I gave in last week and finally bought Sleater-Kinney's All Hands on the Bad One from an Amazon Marketplace seller. I lost my original copy sometime around my trip to LA in spring 2005, so I've been listening to it like crazy. It was just getting sad that I have a signed vinyl copy of the album but no listenable medium. Downloading it would have just ruined what eventually led up to glee. Thank you, self-control. :-)
