Things I hate about windows XP:
-Windows 2000 uses 100MB of RAM without any programs running. XP uses 250MB.
-Probably related to the above, there seem to be a scary number of tasks running at any given instance.
-There's no "Lock Computer" command that I can find. Apparently "Switch Users" is the closest they'll give you.
-It's way off about when files are in use, and frequently won't let me rename folders or unmount drives because files are "still in use", even though there's no applications using them. Possibly an indexing thing? I can't here the drive seeking, so even THAT doesn't make sense. It's really annoying because...
-Quit blue screening when I unsafely remove a USB device. It's not the end of the world.
-The search is just... Stupid. I want to search for all files, every time. I shouldn't have to PICK all files (rather than images/videos/whateveroptionstheygiveyou).
-Quit trying to keep me away from my files. Looking in "C:\Program Files" won't kill my computer, so don't try to keep me out.
-When I plug in my MP3 player or external hard drive, I don't want you to find every single media file for me. Please actually give me a way to disable this (it sometimes gives you a checkbox that claims will stop it, but it keeps coming up).
-Windows Genuine Advantage is not a critical system component, as you claim. Please stop trying to install it.
-Please don't try to install updates behind my back by default.
-Don't pretend that you can uninstall IE, MSN Messenger and Media Player. Having them in add/remove windows components with "removes the icon from the start menu" as a description is just insulting. (Incidentally, why can you no longer uninstall MSN Messenger and Media Player?)
-I don't need to be told that deleting a shortcut doesn't uninstall the program.
-Please don't cripple my control panel by default.
-I'm sure I'm forgetting things here.
I always thought that Vista would be the windows that finally made me switch to Linux, but then I actually had to use XP for an extended amount of time. Unfortunately, Compaq doesn't fully support my new laptop under Windows 2000. I might still give it a try though. Either way, as soon as I can deal with some stupid partitioning issues, I'm getting Ubuntu on here and finally tossing windows (hopefully) altogether.
Here's the software I actually use:
-Firefox (OpenSource, has linux builds.)
-Thunderbird (OpenSource, has linux builds.)
-Gaim (OpenSource, has linux builds.)
-OpenOffice (OpenSource, has linux builds.)
-uTorrent (Runs under Wine)
-DaemonTools (can be replaced by cdemu)
-Media Player Classic (Might run under Wine, since WMP6.4 does, or can probably be replaced with XMMS/Totem or similar)
-A few CygWin tools to replace natively linux apps (mainly ssh with X-forwarding)
-Nero. That may be a bit tricky, as CD Burning is one of the areas where Linux is still slightly lacking.
Aaaand, that's about it. I don't game much anymore. Linux has hundreds of very good free games that are fun to play, and Quake III runs under linux. So, I'm pretty much set here.
