They’re trapped somewhere in the no man’s land between fantasy and reality. Beneath him, soft skin and strong muscle, Bruce chants words and feelings that Batman could never say, would never say; breathless whispers, yearning pleas. Unmasked he’s beautiful and all too human. What he wants Gordon can never give and yet, in these stolen moments, Gordon gives all he can, burdened with the knowledge that it will never be enough, the guilt heavy even in the pleasure.
Bruce tenses beneath him, crying out, strong hands grasping Gordon’s shoulders, pulling him close and he allows it, allows Bruce to gasp into his hair, sobs muffled and harsh between words Gordon can’t return, no matter how true they may be. Slowly, the younger man quietens and calms. Sleep quick to claim him with a trace of a smile.
Gordon waits as sleep comes to him slowly. He can’t save Bruce Wayne any more than Batman can save Gotham. Nor can he save himself, but in these moments, in this borrowed time he can try. He can try and that’s all he can do.
